At a news conference here on Saturday, Karnataka State Sugar Cane Growers’ Association president Kurubur Shantakumar said the farmers across the country have planned a protest in support of their two genuine demands including complete waiver of the farm loan at nationalised banks and implementation of Swaminathan committee report in toto. Lakhs of farmers throughout the nation will participate in the protest which will be historic. The protest has been planned with ‘do or die’ in support of the farmers’ demand. He said lakhs of farmers had committed suicide in the back drop of the agrarian crisis, however, both centre and state government have failed to respond to the concerns of the farmers who have been considered as the backbone of the nation. Over 70 farmer organisations have organised the protest while 10 farmer organisations from Karnataka have expressed solidarity with the agitation and the protest will continue until the gover nments respond to the farmers’ demands. Shantakumar said the income of the farmers in the last 25 years has raised by only 0.5 per cent while that of legislators, parliamentarians has raised by 1250 per cent. The sugar factory owned by cooperative and district incharge minister Ramesh Jarkiholi had also deceived the farmers without paying the dues. The factories in Gujarat had fixed a price of Rs 4,500 for per tone of sugar cane, while a report had been submitted to the government in this connection and urged that the same price should be ensured to the cane g rowers in Kar nataka, he demanded.
