Karti was arrested soon after his arrival at the Chennai airport on Wednesday morning from London. Subsequently he was brought to , Delhi by air and produced before a designated court that granted one-day police remand. The agency had sought 15-day police remand. “He has been evasive in his replies and uncooperative during questioning by CBI earlier. He has given incorrect statements with respect to evidence collected by the CBI. All these evasions have led to delays in conclusion of investigation,” CBI spokesperson Abhishek Dayal said. While being taken to Patiala House courts here, Karti told reporters; “It is absolutely a political vendetta. I will be vindicated soon.” Karti Chidambaram being taken to the Patiala House court in New Delhi on Wednesday | PTI The case against Karti, his firm Chess Management Services (P) Ltd, INX Media (through the then directors Indrani Mukherjea and others), INX News (through then Director Peter Mukherjea), Advantage Strategic Consulting (P) Ltd (through then Director Padma Vishwanathan and unknown others was registered on May 15 last year. The accused were booked for criminal conspiracy and cheating under the IPC and relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Karti through his firm Chess Management allegedly facilitated the INX group in not paying any penalty despite violating the terms of the FIPB approval for FDI receipts. The INX Group had on March 13, 2007 approached the FIPB (Foreign Investment Promotion Board) for approval of FDI Investment and downstream investment. The FIPB approved only FDI investment to the tune of R 4.62 crore and said a separate FIPB approval to the tune of 26 per cent of the issued and outstanding equity share capital of INX News Pvt Ltd would be required. The FIPB did not grant sanction for downstream investment but the INX Group received downstream investment to the tune of `305 crore illegally by the same investors following which the Investigation Wing of the Income Tax Department launched a probe. The INX Group approached Karti for settling the issue and the Media group subsequently did not pay any penalty after its contentions were approved by the Finance Ministry (during P Chidambaram’s tenure as Finance Minister), according to the FIR. “Karti Chidambaram was the Promoter Director of Chess Management Services (P) Ltd. whereas ASCPL was being controlled by him indirectly. Information also disclosed that the invoices for approximately an amount of R3.5 crores were also got raised in favour of INX group in the name of other companies in which Karti was having sustainable interests either directly or indirectly reads the FIR. ,” GHOST HOUSE HORROR Leopard gives a real scare at Wonderla E X P R E S S N E W S S E R V I C E @ Bengaluru THE Ghost House at the famous water amusement park Wonderla on Bengaluru’s outskirts presented a real scare on Wednesday afternoon. An adult female leopard strayed into WonderLa and then took refuge in the Ghost House, even as unsuspecting visitors — families with children — passed it inside the thrill-house assuming it to be one of the scary items there! Crowds that thronged this place reported seeing the big cat at 3 pm inside the scary Ghost House as well as near the Termite Coaster — where it was finally tranquillised and captured at about 5.30 pm by a 30-strong team comprising forest department and Bannerghatta Biological Park personnel. In fact, people outside the 82-acre Wonderla, located 28 km from Bengaluru, had reported seeing the leopard climb the compound wall of the water amusement park and entering near the roller coaster dry-and-wet rides. Once the news spread about a leopard entering Wonderla, panic spread in the amusement park. When the leop- ard was sighted, the place was immediately evacuated. The state forest department swung into action and rushed a 30-member team to catch and immobilise the leopard. The scared animal was finally found inside the Termite Coaster. The forest personnel immediately netted the leopard to prevent its escape and then tranquillised it, before taking it out to Kumbalgodu state forest, Ramakrishnappa, assistant conservator of forests, Ramnagara Range, told Express. They plan to release it in the wild. The park officials said a fire in the forest area opposite Wonderla at around 2 pm could have scared the leopard for it to take refuge in WonderLa. The area is filled with stray canines, which leopards prey on.
