The reports from a section of electronic media about a group of Congress MLAs having secretly moved to a resort in the posh Juhu locality in Mumbai on Saturday in an attempt to quit the party allegedly under BJP’s “Operation Lotus” caused ripples in the Congress camp. Attempts made by The New Sunday Express to contact some of the Congress MLAs ‘missing’ from their constituencies failed as they did not respond. However, MLA Mahesh Kumathalli of GOVT IS STABLE: HDK CM H D Kumaraswamy who was offering puja at Sringeri Sharada temple when he received reports of the alleged plans of some Congress MLAs heading to Mumbai, said, “Government is strong and stable. His repeated visits to the offices of the district collector and tehsildar to inquire about a land acquisition notice for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project have yielded no results so far. None of the officials could give him details about land to be acquired and route alignment. “I will never travel in a bullet (train) so why should I give my land for a project that is being constructed for the rich? The government has technology and money, the entire stretch should be built underground without disturbing farmers,” said Dhinde, signaling towards the con- crete markings left behind by a survey team on his small plot. Dhinde is not alone. The Prime Minister’s dream project is giving sleepless nights to over 5,400 people, one-third of them living below the poverty line, in Maharashtra and Gujarat. Many of them either stand to lose land holdings or houses. Racing against time are officials of the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the implementing agency of the `1.08 lakh crore project, as the land acquisition deadline of December 2018 nears. According to NHSRCL data, only 0.9 hectares of the 1,400 hectares of required land has been acquired so far. Beginning from Thane in Maharashtra, The New Sunday Express travelled along the 508-km corridor, passing through Palghar and Boisar in Maharashtra and Vapi, Valsad, Surat, Vadodara and Anand in Gujarat. The proposed corridor traverses through small villages surround ed by p ad dy fields in Maharashtra and those falling under the fruit belt in south Gujarat. Dadra and NaPART 1 g a r H ave l i l i e s mid-way . In villages of Thane district, there is stiff resistance from farmers and land owners. Many residents of Bharodi village complained about losing land to multiple projects. Land was already acquired or kar from Chikkaballapur with independent MLA from Mulabagal H Nagesh provided more grist for the speculations as the trio hit the highway towards Chennai in the same car. When Express tried to contact Nagaraj, the MLA said they were going on personal work. While the buzz is about the trio heading towards Mumbai from Chennai, KPCC president Dinesh Gundu Rao in a hurriedly convened media interaction rubbished the reports. Appealing to the media not to speculate and mislead the people about the fate of the coalition government, Rao said, “All our MLAs are in touch with us.” According to sources, a group of Congress rebels recently entered into a secret ‘agreement’ with BJP in Maharashtra to bring down the coalition governP5 ment. Yashaswini has been booked for assault and lending money at very high interest rates (known as ‘meter baddi’ in local parlance) and faces charges of extortion, robbery and chain snatching. According to the victims and the police, people are so scared of her that very few come forward to register cases against her. While her victims wonder how she was chosen for the post, Pramod Muthalik, founder, Sri Rama is in the process of acquisition for other projects, including the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, National Highway 8 expansion, Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway and a dedicated freight corridor. Another complaint is that there is confusion over the alignment of the bullet train route. They are allegedly not provided with documents or any specific detail about how much of their land will be taken away the com, pensation in lieu of their acquired land, and rehabilitation. Often, teams found surreptitiously carrying out land markings and measurements were held up by angry villagers at panchayat offices for hours. This correspondent was witness to one such instance in Bharodi. FULL REPORT: P9 Step down or get killed, militants warn cops, jawan F AYA Z W A N I @ Srinagar A day after three policemen were abducted and killed in Kashmir, militants on Saturday stepped up their psychological war against the security forces by uploading pictures of 12 police officials and an army jawan on social media, and asking them to quit their jobs or face “severe consequences”. The pictures, uploaded by the Hizbul Mujahideen, also had the names, designations and addresses of the officials. They were told to quit and upload their videos on social media, or get ready to take a “head shot”. All of them hail from Anantnag, Kupwara, Kulgam and Shopian, or are posted there. Among them were two policewomen and an army man who works with Rashtria Rifles counterinsurgency force. Some of them also had the security of their families threatened. “We are giving you two days to quit or we will target you,” a police official was warned. Both clarified that neither the Indian nor the French government had any say in the choice of the service partner and that it was purely a commercial decision taken by Dassault Aviation. “The French government is in no manner involved in the choice of Indian industrial partners who have been, are being, or will be selected by French companies,” the French government said in its statement. His conclusion was based on the fact that “Prime Minister had held a one on one meeting with the French President during which India conveyed that the service partner would be Reliance Defence of Anil Ambani”. This triggered a sharp reaction from the BJP with Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad charging the Congress with playing into the hands of India’s enemies. “By consistently demanding to know details of the Rafale fighter jets, which would jeopardise national security Rahul Gandhi is playing into the hands of Pakistan and , China,” charged Prasad, also alleging that the Congress under the UPA regime had sought bribe from Dassault. DESPITE the state government announcing a `43,000-crore farm loan waiver and bringing in an ordinance to curb fleecing by private moneylenders, there seems to be no end to the woes of farmers. Burdened by huge loans and with no relief in sight, a farmer, along with his wife and two children, committed suicide on the outskirts of Sunkathonnur in Pandavapura taluk on Saturday . The family had availed loans of up to `20 lakh from a private moneylender, cooperative banks, SHGs and other sources. The victims are Nandish (37), Komala (30) and Chandana (12) and Manoj (8). Nandish’s last-ditch effort to extricate himself from the debt burden by seeking help from CM H D Kumaraswamy at a recent Janata Darshan proved detrimental as the moneylender allegedly turned more aggressive to recover his loan fearing that any delay could see intervention from the police in favour of Nandish. Nandish had also shared his agony with District Minister C S Puttaraju. On Friday night, Nandish reportedly bought chicken kabab and laced it with poison and consumed it along with his family The . incident came to light on Saturday morning when villagers noticed the bodies outside the house. In a death note left behind — addressed to Kumaraswamy — Nandish mentioned about his family’s financial woes and also BSY slams HDK, calls loan waiver a farce BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa has termed CM H D Kumaraswamy’s claims on farm loan waiver “a farce” and blamed the latter for the suicide of the P5 young farmer’s family. said that no one was responsible for him taking the extreme step. Nandish also said that he had brought the issue to the notice of the CM during a Janata Darsha, police said. Doctors, who conducted the post-mortem, confirmed that the family had consumed poison. Blood samples will be sent to a forensic lab. Nandish owned 2.5 acres of land. He had taken `10 lakh as loan and sunk six borewells, but they failed to yield water. The seventh borewell, however, yielded water and he was able to grow vegetables and take up sericulture. He also bought two milching cows for `1.6 lakh, but they died recently Nandish was . the only son of Kempegowda and Kamalamma, who are battling illhealth. Two of Nandish’s sisters are married and one, who is physically challenged, stays with the elderly couple at Sunkathonnur. Meanwhile, Cooperation Minister Bandeppa Kashempur urged farmers not to lose courage and said the government was with them.
