The probe began after the company released an OPV containing type-2 poliovirus, which was withdrawn globally in 2016 as its risks outweighed the benefits. The managing director of Biomed was arrested last week, and says he can’t explain how the type-2 virus got into the vaccines. The firm’s four directors, who could provide crucial leads, are absconding, a senior official in the Union Health and Family Welfare ministry said. “A four-member team is at the company, trying to find if something went wrong in the manu- facturing or packaging process that could have caused the contamination,” a senior Central Drug Standards Control Organisation official told TNIE. Meanwhile, the authorities ordered scrutiny of OPV samples from all domestic suppliers. “We will also test samples from the five other domestic OPV suppliers, to ensure they don’t carry type-2 poliovirus,” the official said. IN a major jolt to Opposition unity ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, mercurial BSP chief Mayawati on Wednesday lit into the Congress for offering her a paltry share of seats in poll bound Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, saying the BSP has decided to go it alone. While the Congress played down the attack, indicating the doors for an alliance were not shut, it was music to the ears of BJP chief Amit Shah, trying as he is to counter the anti-incumbency factor in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. “We won’t go with the Congress at any cost in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. We think the Congress is trying to eliminate smaller parties like the BSP in the name of wiping out the BJP Mayawati said in an ,” interview to an electronic news agency . While the BSP was angling for a decent share of seats in Madhya Pradesh since it had polled 6.29% votes in 2013, the situation was different in Rajasthan, where the Congress expects to win on its own. In 2013, the BJP had trounced the Congress by a margin of less than 7%. In Rajasthan, where BJP Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje is sweating it out, the BSP’s 3.37% votes in 2013 could act as the swing votes, had the grand old party shown more accommodation. Mayawati singled out Congress veteran Digvijaya Singh for attack, saying he wrecked the alliance in Madhya Pradesh fearing CBI and Enforcement Directorate raids. She, however, said UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi were in favour of striking an alliance with the BSP . For his part, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala hoped any creases in the relationship between the two parties would be removed through discussion but views of the respective state units will be factored in before any poll pacts. Observers also see in Mayawati’s belligerence an attempt to cut the Congress seat share in Uttar Pradesh in 2019, so as to ensure the SP and the BSP get to enjoy big chunks of the seat cake. WHAT MAKES HER ANGRY Cong is offering just 9 of 200 seats in Rajasthan, 15-20 of 230 in MP and 5-6 of 90 in Chhattisgarh BSP hoped for a large chunk in the GwaliorChambal region, as it finished second in five out of 11 seats in the region in 2013. The area is Jyotiradtiya Scindia’s turf as well BSP polled 6.29% votes in MP in 2013, yet Cong is not giving it the respect it deserves BSP fears the Cong is trying to eat up its substantial voter base in all three states In Chhattisgarh, BSP has already tied up with Ajit Jogi’s Janata Congress Chhattisgarh Analysts also attribute Mayawati’s belligerence to cutting Cong out of the equation in UP, when the seat distribution is finalised EXPRESS IMPACT Girl restored, mom says she’s got back a lost treasure RAMKRISHNA BADSESHI @ Kalaburagi ALL'S well that ends well. After weeks of running around for restoration of custody of an orphan child she had raised for the last seven years, Jayashree Guttedar of Gubbi Colony here was a relieved woman when the district authorities handed back the 7-year-old girl to her on Wednesday evening. "It's like we have got back a lost treasure. My joy knows no bounds," she told TNIE. About a month ago, an anonymous caller had informed the child helpline that Jayashree had been raising an orphan child illegally. Officials of the Women and Child Development Department had then taken custody of the child and admitted her to ‘ mulya Shishugraha’, a governA ment orphanage. Ever since, Jayashree had been calling on officials of different departments to get custody of the girl. On Monday she even met district in, charge minister Priyank Kharge and Deputy Commissioner R Venkateshkumar. P6 A mystery disappearance of the official profile of Congress' social media in charge Divya Spandana on her Twitter handle led to speculation about her resignation. TV channels and social media were abuzz with news that Ramya, as she is better known, had been stripped of her position and that the party would assign her some other role. But the Congress was quick to issue a denial and by afternoon her status as someone "handling Social V I N C E N T D ’ S O U Z A @ Mangaluru Media & Digital Communications for the Congress party" was back on her Twitter handle. Divya, 36, is a former actor and former member of the Lok Sabha from Mandya in Karnataka. As head of the Congress' digital communications over the past one year she has been noticed for her sharp attacks on the BJP and PM Modi. The speculation over her quitting erupted days after Divya was charged with sedition for using unparliamentary word (thief) against PM Modi over the Rafale jet deal. P5 RCU ROW Saffronisation of campus led to attack: Jarkiholi N A U S H A D B I J A P U R @ Belagavi The recent attack on Rani Channamma University (RCU) Vice-Chancellor Shivanand Hosmani is turning into a political fight on campus between Congress and BJP leaders in Belagavi. The leader in the eye of the storm, former minister Satish Jarkiholi (Congress), on Wednesday said that saffronisation of the campus by BJP members had led to the attack. Parliament member Suresh Angadi hit back at Jarkiholi questioning if saf- fronisation could not be done in India, can it be done in Pakistan. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday , Jarkiholi said that the activists who barged into the university, were actually protesting against the saffronisation of RCU campus and wanted to question university authorities on the way syndicate member from BJP Raju Chikkangoudar was virtually controlling the affairs of the university . While trying to downplay the incident, Jarkiholi said, "A large number of people had entered the university premis- es. Some in the group may be our people who had gone to discuss about several problems concerning RCU's administration. The attack was unfortunate as things could have been resolved through talks and not in that manner." Former minister Satish Jarkiholi lashed out at Suresh Angadi and asked the MP why he did not question when BJP members who had beat up Chief Engineer of Minor Irrigation Department in Belagavi a few years ago. Meanwhile, the V-C is yet to lodge a P4 complaint with the police. E X P R E S S N E W S S E R V I C E @ Mangaluru MINISTER for Food and Civil Supplies Zameer Ahmed Khan, who was in Sullia on Wednesday to take part in various government and private events, raised many eyebrows when he went around giving cash doles. He gave ` 26,000 each to two students and `10,000 each to two others. Besides, he also announced `8 lakh donation to the school and handed over `5 lakh cash on the spot. At another event at Peradka, an elderly man, who was affected by floods and landslides in Jodupala, requested help and Zameer handed him a bundle of notes amounting `50,000. In another function which he attended, Zameer announced that he will bear the expenses of the Umra pilgrimage of 12 Muslims youths belonging to an organisation named SKSSF and also sponsor a family trip to a foreign location or pilgrimage destination of their choice for four Bajrang Dal activists.
