Come April, interest rates on home, automobile or personal loans will reduce by at least 100-200 basis points, or 1-2%, from the current rates, which are upwards of 8%. This is because RBI has mandated banks to move all floating rate loans to an external benchmark as against an internally set MCLR (marginal cost of funds-based lending rate). Going by this, loan rates will henceforth be linked, not to MCLR, but an external benchmark such as repo rate, 91-day Treasury Bill yields or any other benchmark market interest rate produced by the Financial Benchmarks India Pvt Ltd. It means, if a bank links home loans to say repo , rate, it will be priced at 6.5%, plus an additional spread (as against MCLR of 8% + additional spread), effectively bringing down rates. Special judge Arvind Kumar, however, granted only five days custody and asked the CBI to provide all documents including the chargesheet to Michel. As expected, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah were extatic over Michel’s extradition, saying it would reveal the corrupt antics of the opposition Congress party. “Shouldn’t he (Michel) be caught; should he be protected; what does the Opposition want?” asked Shah, while addressing a rally in Rajasthan on the last day of campaigning for the Assembly polls. Insisting that the extradition would spell doom for the Congress, BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao claimed “Michel’s closeness to (Congress president) Rahul Gandhi is believed to be akin to Ottavio Quattrocchi’s with Sonia Gandhi. Michel has tried to protect the (Gandhi) family so far. But, no further.” The Congress responded by demanding a CBI probe into the exoneration of AgustaWestland and its parent firm Finmeccanica, which had been blacklisted by the previous UPA government.
