MbS, as he is popularly known, was received with the trade-mark bear hug by Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he arrived at Palam on Tuesday night. Given the February 14 suicide attack on a CRPF convoy claimed by the Pakistan based Jaish-e-Mohammad, and the fact that MbS had visited Pakistan a day before his India visit to offer $20 billion in aid and praise Islamabad’s efforts to fight terror, there were many who felt that India should have been a bit less welcoming towards the visiting prince. “But that’s not how foreign policy works,” retorted a senior official. “Let us not forget that Saudi Arabia supplies over 20 per cent of our crude oil needs, and the fact that over 2.7 million Indians work in the Kingdom, sending home over a billion dollars each year. Also, it’s time we stopped looking at our relationship with other countries through the Pakistan prism,” he said. EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE @Bengaluru THE five-day Aero India 2019 kicked off here on Wednesday with a touching tribute to the Surya Kiran pilot Wing Commander Sahil Gandhi. He died after a mid-air collision with another aircraft of the team while rehearsing a manoeuvre on Tuesday . The tribute, witnessed by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu, was offered with three Indian Air Force aircraft — Sukhoi-30 MKI, LCA Tejas and Jaguar — flying in the ‘Missing Man Formation’ in which the position right of the leader of the formation is left vacant as a mark of respect for the fallen pilot to whom it is dedicated. As the three aircraft were preparing to fly, the background commentary said: “Yesterday our world renowned Surya Kiran aerobatic display team lost one of its finest display pilots Wg Cdr Sahil Gandhi, who was part of the core team that resurrected the Surya Kiran on the Hawk aircraft in 2015.” “The team (Surya Kiran) lost a buddy; the Indian Air Force, a thorough professional; and the nation, a hero.” The commentator followed this with a poem penned by Gary Claude Stoker dedicated: “Flight is freedom in its purest form. To dance with the clouds which follow the storm. To roll and glide, to wheel and spin; to feel the joy that swells within. Should my end come while I am flying; whether brightest day or darkest night; spare me your pity and shrug off the pain; secure in that knowledge that I would do it again; for each of us is created to die; and within me I know, I was born to fly .” The flying teams of French Dassault Rafale and US’ F-16 Hornet, too, P6 offered their tributes. CAUSE OF CONCERN Every street in this village has a soldier serving the nation R A G H O T TA M K O P PA R @ Gadag HATALAGERI village, with a population of 4,000, has at least 150 soldiers currently serving the nation. Almost every street here has at least one or two families that have their sons serving in the armed forces. The tradition of joining the armed forces — CRPF, BSF and the Army — goes back three generations in this village. When the people here heard about the Pulwama attack, the entire village was a worried lot for their sons and grandsons serving in Jammu and Kashmir. Many are unaware of the postings of their sons and this added to their anxiety . The villagers say that along with immense worry about their sons, they also are an an- gry lot. Angry about the fact that 40 lives were lost in Pulwama, and that there is a war-like crisis without any war. Yellappa Beleri and his wife Neelavva have four sons, of whom three are working in the Indian Army while the fourth son takes care of farm lands. They say that they want their sons to avenge the attack. Another family of Satyappa Bentur also has three sons in the Army. “When we saw the news, we were in shock at how these terrorists killed our people. Soldiers struggle to protect us. If they are killed, what about others? I know that my sons are working in different regions but many villagers have no idea and are still waiting for calls from their sons,” Bentur said. Shrikant Kari, who was re- cently awarded with the Sena Medal, is now in Hatalageri after he was injured during a gunfight in Shopian valley, 30km from Pulwama district. “We are upset over the attack. Terrorists know how strong we are and this is why they are attacking from the back door. But we will not sit quiet. Our soldiers will give them a fitting reply he said. ,”
