While the bank cited surplus liquidity and falling interest rate scenario as reasons for the cut, other state-run banks are expected to follow suit as they benchmark their rates to SBI’s. Interest rates have been cut by 50-75 bps for deposits with tenure between 7 and 179 days. Retail long-term deposit rates will come down by 20 bps, while interest rate for bulk deposits of `2 crore der pressure to do so now as RBI is expected to slash its repo rate once again in August. While it is good news for borrowers — a reduction in deposit rates will allow banks to cut lending rates — it means lower returns for those keeping money in bank deposits. This could trigger problems for banks as savings may flow into these instruments. Even before SBI announced the cuts, Bank of Baroda had cut deposits rates by 25 BPS, and its oneyear as well as 5-10-year deposit rates now stand at 6.45%. Karur father & son fighting lake encroachment murdered by gang A R A V I N D R A J @Karur A father and son, both agriculturalists, who had taken efforts to retrieve an encroached lake, were brutally murdered at Muthalaipatti village in Karur on Monday morning, allegedly by a gang of six. As the deceased, Vandu alias Nallathambi (40) and his father Ramar alias Veeramalai (65), had filed a public interest litigation against encroachment of the lake at the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court, police suspect the encroachers’ involvement in the murders. Police said Nallathambi was returning home on his bike from a Tiruchy market when a gang attacked him with sharp weapons, killing him. The gang then went to his house, 500m away where , Veeramalai was waiting with his 12-year-old grandson for a school van. As the gang killed Veeramalai, the child fled, police said. Kulithalai police have filed a case and probe is on. Unnao Rape victim critical N A M I TA B A J PA I @ Lucknow A day after a horrible head-on collision between a truck and a car the Unnao rape victim was travelling in, the UP police filed an FIR against rape accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar and his henchmen, based on a complaint by her family However, the victim’s mother . demanded a CBI probe. Sengar has been in jail since the last one-and-a-half years after national outrage over the rape victim’s account. Her family alleged that Sengar was trying to eliminate her. The car crash killed two aunts of the survivor and left her and her lawyer severely injured. Both the aunts were witnesses in the rape case against Sengar. On Monday, the victim and her lawyer Mahendra Singh Chauhan were shifted to Lucknow Trauma Centre where they continued to be critical. Gutkha scam: Assets worth K246cr attached ED probe leads to properties of key accused in TN, AP, Pondy Probe is based on CBI FIR ED said the accused had also purchased shares in Goutham Buddha Textile Park, Guntur and vehicles for the sale and distribution of gutkha. ED initiated its probe based on an FIR filed by the CBI. Manufacture, import, supply, distribution and sale of gutkha and other chewable tobacco, were banned in TN & Pondy in May 2013. We filed a case before the Madras HC to direct CBI to investigate the case... I hope CBI and ED will investigate this scam to the fullest and bring all those involved to the book. P Wilson, DMK Rajya Sabha MP EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE @ Chennai A year after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched its probe into the gutkha scam, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), it has attached 174 immovable properties in Tamil Nadu, Puduchery and Andhra Pradesh with market value of `243.80 crore and moveable properties in the form of shares and vehicles worth `2.29 crore. An investigation conducted under PMLA revealed that accused A V Madhava Rao, P V Srinivasa Rao and Tallam Uma Shankar Gupta, promoters and directors of Jayem Group, which manufactured MDM brand of gutkha, and others, who were involved in illegal manufacture, sale and distribution of gutkha products in TN , had a tur nover of `639.40 crores from June 2013 to June 2016. The money derived out of the criminal activities was invested in moveable and immoveable properties in the Guntur district of AP, and in Salem, Puducherry and Chen- nai. These assets consisting of 174 immoveable properties and moveable properties totalling `246 crore have been provisionally attached. These properties were purchased in names of Gayathri Realtors, Medha Diary Private Limited, Vaijayanthi Spinners. Three factory premises were acquired by the accused in the names of relatives or employees in this the period to facilitate smooth running of their illegal gutkha business, said Zone-II ED Joint Director P Manikkavel. The accused used profits to purchase land in their names and in the names of family or relatives.
