Two days later he passed away . As soon as the judgment was pronounced, slogans of Bharat Mata ki jai rent the air outside the court. Recently, the MDMK announced that people wanting to take a picture with its chief Vaiko would have to donate `100 towards the party fund. On Wednesday, a party supporter tried to brazenly break that rule. The end result was a viral video. The incident happened when Vaiko was in Ambur. His supporters burst crackers and raised slogans when they saw his car approaching them. As soon as he alighted, a crowd gathered, each of them with a `100 note between their fingers. While shaking hands, they slipped the note to him and posed for pictures. Amid them came a bespectacled man, his empty hands extended towards the leader. It was met with a firm ‘no’, and an inquiry about ‘donation’. Finally the empty-hand, ed supporter was escorted away by members of the crowd gathered around the leader. We have just reintroduced an old practice we used to follow 4-5 years ago, said MDMK leader Mallai Sathya about the donation. “I am not aware about the Ambur incident,” he added. Trump now goes after India’s WTO edge What the rules say While WTO has no specific definition for developing nations, it has benchmarks based on per capita income and share of global trade which allows countries to subsidise exports and have higher tariff barriers than others EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE @ New Delhi BARELY a month after berating the WTO for treating large economies like India and China as ‘developing nations’, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday alleged the two countries were taking undue advantage of the tag. Speaking in Pe n n s y l va n i a o n T u e s d ay, T r u m p called India and China ‘economic giants’ that should not have the benefits meant for developing nations. “They (India and China) were taking advantage of us for years and years,” he said. The ‘developing nation’ tag allows certain trade benefits and losing it could hurt India’s foreign trade. According to senior commerce ministry officials, India is in touch other developing nations to ensure WTO does not dilute their trade and tariff privileges. Developing nations get “special and differential treatment” in WTO, enabling them to give subsidies in agriculture and set higher barriers for market entry than most developed economies. Trump is grumpy because he believes the US is being short-changed by WTO rules. “Everybody is growing but us,” he complained. With 21.2% of the population earning less than $2 a day India is indeed a develop, ing nation, said an official.
