In 2009, he and Sushma Swaraj were seen as the BJP’s GenNext leaders. And Jaitley was spoken about as a prime ministerial candidate. Both were earlier brought to the political centrestage by party patriarch L K Advani. But in a twist of fate, both departed in just 18 days, leaving behind their firm imprints. An astute strategist who worked behind the scenes to fuel the rise of the BJP he rose from the lower rungs , of the RSS, having been the Delhi University Students’ Union president as an ABVP activist. Jaitley soon rubbed shoulders with tall leaders after taking the plunge into politics during Emergency In less than three decades, he was . a Cabinet minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government at the Centre. A food connoisseur, Jaitley had a tough time dealing with his diabetic condition, which ultimately made him opt for bariatric surgery in 2016. Two years later, he underwent kidney transplant. In the same year, doctors detected he was suffering from of soft tissue cancer as well. In view of his poor health, Jaitley opted out of the Modi 2.0 Cabinet. On August 9 after a bout of breathlessness, he was admitted to AIIMS, where he breathed his last. A lawyer par excellence, Jaitley brought deep legal insight for the BJP and senior party leaders during the two-and-a-half decades of bitter political rivalry with ruling dispensations at the Centre. He proved to be an impregnable legal shield for both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah when they were pursued by investigating agencies during the UPA regime. Within the BJP, Jaitley fast emerged as a strategist after Advani drafted him into his core team in the early 1990s. He scripted the alliance between the BJP and the Janata Dal (U) to wrest power in Bihar in 2005 from the Lalu Prasad-led Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), which ruled the state for one-and-a-half decades. Abdul Khader Raheem, 39, a native of Kodungalloor in Thrissur district, was taken into custody by the Ernakulam Central police around 4pm suspecting him of having links with a six-member Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) gang that is said to have sneaked into Tamil Nadu to carry out terror attacks across the country . However, Abdul Khader’s counsel alleged that a human trafficking racket operating in Bahrain with Kerala roots was trying to implicate him for helping a Malayali woman escape from their clutches. The police are yet to record Abdul Khader’s arrest. Officers said he was detained based on the intelligence inputs received by them regarding his terror links. “He will be handed over to the intelligence wing of the Kerala Police, which deals with terrorism and anti-national activities,” said an officer.
