However, Alagiri said though he was expelled from the DMK, he won’t leave the party. Alagiri loyalists said the posters were put up without his knowledge and only a few of his supporters pasted the posters, which were removed soon. Alagiri also said he would meet his supporters on Monday and decide his future course of action. The posters announced a new party and a party flag, which resembled the DMK flag but featured the picture of DMK president M Karunanidhi, sources said. The posters also announced that Alagiri was the new party’s general secretary, displaying “Kalaignar DMKin pothu seyalalarae, katchiyum ready, kodiyum ready (both party and flag are ready)”, police sources said. The posters also carried pictures of Alagiri and his son Durai Dhayanidhi, along with some of his supporters. A close aide said: “The posters were meant to welcome Anjanenjan after he met public figures, including Rajinikanth and Vaiko (in Chennai). Even we (aides) did not know about it. Three of the local supporters of ‘Annan’ had done it.” Chennai: The Election Commission (EC) is developing a mobile application to help people send photographs using cellphones, in case pictures are clicked during distribution of money and goods to the electorate by political parties. This is one of the efforts being made by the EC to curb money power during the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. “The mobile application would be available for use very soon,” Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar said at a press conference at the Secretariat here on Saturday. Already, the EC has announced separate e-mail addresses of all districts in Tamil Nadu using which citizens could send photos and evidence to prove distribution of allurements to voters. The CEO said, at present, in many cases, due to lack of evidence, violators could not be brought to book. “Let all citizens join hands with us to end money power,” Praveen Kumar added. Ajay Yadav, Joint CEO (IT), announced a new SMS facility for the voters to identify the location of their polling stations. All they have to do is to type EPIC and leave a space and type the EPIC number provided in their Voter Identity Card and SMS it to 9444123456. Govt Proposes Lean Meats, Jungle Gym for Fat Cats in Zoos by Richa Sharma New Delhi: They may not be quite munching nachos and gulping sodas in front of the television, but food that is as bad as junk and lack of exercise are making animals in our zoos prone to lifestyle diseases. The problem is so severe that a set of guidelines has been released to put them back in shape and save them Guided, the Youth Can Do Wonders Arrest Warrant Against Devyani in Visa Fraud Case from death. A five-year study commissioned by the Ministry of Environment and Forests has confirmed what was long suspected — clueless authorities are feeding animals in captivity the wrong kind of food, making them lethargic and fat, deprived of exercise as they are in the restrictive environment. Preparing diet charts for animals is not an easy task and it took scientists at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly more than five years to provide a baseline data on feed consumption of 53 species. The study — Standardization of Animal Diets in Indian Zoos — was commissioned by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), an autonomous body under the Environment Ministry. The total cost of the project was about `30 lakh. The guidelines, which have so far been circulated to 200 zoos across the country, suggest adding variety in feed, special foods only once a week, vitamin supplements and going easy on bread, sweet fruits and high protein items like eggs, chicken, milk and liver. So, no more nuts and bread for monkeys, fruits and vegetables for elephants or milk and egg for tigers. If the guidelines issued last week are met, animals in captivity will not only consume healthy food, but have to make an effort to look for their next meal. The idea is to either hide the food or keep it at a point which will make the animals sweat for their supper. C M Y K by Devirupa Mitra New Delhi/New York: An arrest warrant was on Saturday issued in the US against Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade on visa fraud charges after her fresh indictment by US prosecutors, who accused her of “illegally” underpaying and “exploiting” her domestic maid. The fresh arrest warrant means Khobragade won’t be able to travel to US on an ordinary passport. If she goes there on official work, she will be on a diplomatic passport which will give her immunity from arrest, according to an official. After Khobragade’s second indictment by a New York jury, India expressed disappointment, noting that any consequent action will impact bilateral ties and that the government will “no longer engage” with the US legal system in the case. “We are disappointed that the... US Department of Justice chose to obtain a second Devyani Khobragade indictment against IFS officer Dr Devyani Khobragade, despite the fact that the first indictment and arrest warrant were dismissed earlier this week,” said MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin. Following the second indictment, Akbaruddin said, “This was an unnecessary step. Any measures consequent to this decision in the US, will unfortunately impact efforts on both sides to build the Indo-US strategic partnership.” He added that since India has argued that the case against Khobragade had no merit, the second indictment had no impact on her official position. BIG GUNS IN FRAY Express News Service Court Fines Kejri, Sisodia Gang-rape Order on Mar 20 at a certain height with the transponder switched off at a time when the low-level radar system was operational, it is quite possible that it may have gone undetected,” a senior officer of the Andaman and Nicobar Command told the media on Saturday at Port Blair. However, the officer added that it depends on the height the aircraft was flying and the kind of radar system that was operational at that time. “We checked our radar data but found nothing,” he added. The officer said that India has been given two specific search areas, which have been almost completely searched by defence aircraft and vessels though there was no trace of the missing airliner. “We are conducting only a surface search in a manner that we don’t have to search those areas again. We are looking for debris and not using equipment for an underwater search as it is a vast area and needs specific locations,” the officer added. Narendra Modi will step outside his pocket borough — Gujarat — to contest from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. Modi managed to secure the seat after reluctance by former party president and sitting MP Murli Manohar Joshi to vacate the seat and shift to Kanpur. Joshi appeared to give in to intense pressure build up within the party by those favouring Modi. Party president Rajnath Singh too shifted to Lucknow to reach Lok Sabha. The decision on if Modi would also contest from Gujarat will be made on Tuesday when the party’s central election committee is scheduled to meet. Senior leader Arun Jaitley too decided to contest from Amritsar in Punjab to make his electoral debut, forcing incumbent cricketer-turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu to say he will not contest from anywhere else, and would not “beg” for another seat.
