The development came on a day CV Ananda Bose abruptly put in his papers as West Bengal Governor, barely two months before the state government’s tenure ends on May 7. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed concern at Bose’s resignation even as it sparked speculation on the imposition of President’s rule in the state. Bose will be replaced by Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi. A senior BJP leader, Telangana-bound Shukla has held several positions during his political career — Minister of State for Finance and a minister in Uttar Pradesh. Born in Khajani in Uttar Pradesh, Shukla was elected as an MLA in 1989 from Gorakhpur Urban and had been serving as Governor of Himachal Pradesh since February 18, 2023. Mamata took to X to express her concern: “The reasons behind his resignation are not known to me at this moment. However, given the prevailing circumstances, I would not be surprised if the Governor has been subjected to some pressure from the Union home minister to serve certain political interests on the eve of the forthcoming State assembly elections.” She came down heavily on the Centre for naming Ravi as the successor. “The Union home minister has only informed me about appointing R N Ravi as the Governor but didn’t discuss the issue with me as per convention,” Mamata alleged. The ruling Trinamool Congress fears the Centre could impose President’s rule amidst intense rumblings over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls because of deletions of over 60 lakh voters in the final rolls and placing 60 lakh more in the ‘under adjudication’ category . However, the BJP leadership denied the TMC charges. BJP MLA Ashok Lahiri, told this newspaper, “BJP has no interest in imposition of 356 in Bengal. IRIS Bushehr has an engine problem, which it wants fixed. Lanka, however, agreed to bring part of the 208 personnel on board ashore while moving the vessel away from the vicinity of Colombo Port. In a televised address to the nation, President Dissanayake said he would permit the Sri Lankan Navy to transfer a portion of the crew ashore in line with the country’s obligations under international law. He added that Sri Lanka did not want the vessel to enter Colombo Port as its presence close to the island’s main commercial harbour could pose risks to shipping activity and the economy. GHMC to state govt: Clear `5,000 cr dues or service our debts S B a c h a n J ee t S i n g h @ Hyderabad The cash-strapped Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has asked the state government to clear outstanding dues or directly service loans taken by the civic body for infrastructure projects. Official sources said the dues payable to GHMC by the state government are estimated between `5,000 crore and `5,500 crore. These include property tax arrears on government-owned properties, about `2,500 crore towards stamp duty share, `150 crore in mutation fees and other statutory transfers. GHMC has raised loans from nationalised banks and financial institutions to fund projects such as the Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure (H-CITI), Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP) and Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP). Search and Rescue mission has been initiated,” Defence PRO Lt Col Mahender Rawat said in a statement. He further said that search and rescue operations have been initiated to ascertain the status of the fighter jet. In aviation terms, an aircraft is considered “overdue” when it fails to report or make contact at the expected time after a flight or communication check. The status of the aircraft and its pilot is not yet known.
