A customs office and other essential arrangements have also been made operational at Gunji. “After verification of the remaining applications, 25 to 30 more passes are likely to be issued in the next two to three days,” Dharachula Sub Divisional Magistrate Ashish Joshi told this newspaper. Trade via this route was halted in 20192020 due to Covid-19 and border tensions. The setback comes at a time when Pakistan is reportedly moving closer to inducting China’s J-35 stealth fighter, which could introduce 5th gen combat aircraft into the region before the AMCA enters service. It is also alleged that even this 10% quota has not been fully implemented in some years. “A few judgments of the Madras High Court and the Supreme Court have upheld the principle that at least 33% of posts should be filled through direct recruitment. However, only 10% seats were earmarked for direct recruitment in some years, and sometimes, all vacancies were filled through promotions. Given the rising unemployment, the government should increase the share of direct recruitment to 50% in Group-I services. Only then will the annual number of vacancies cross 200 in the coming years,” a recently recruited Group-I officer told TNIE.
