After OPEC failed to clinch a deal with Russia on production cuts, which would have shored up oil prices, Saudi late on Saturday slashed its official selling price for April for all its crude grades. Saudi also decided to raise in April its production to more than 10 million barrels per day . According to traders, the slump in crude costs will help Asian refiners improve their margins, battered by a demand slump from the coronavirus outbreak. On Sunday all the , seven bourses in the Gulf were in the red due to panic sell-off over fears that energy prices could collapse. The Saudi stock market, the largest in the region, fell 8.3%. It was the lowest closing since November 2017. This is not the first time OPEC is locking horns with Russia. They had waged a similar market-share war in between 2014 and 2016 in a bid to influence US shale production by slashing prices and offering more supplies to the Asian region. The tussle ended when OPEC and Russia struck a deal to cut production, which collapsed last Friday when Moscow turned down OPEC’s proposal to further tighten supply by 1.5 million barrels a day to counter the effects of the novel coronavirus. Following this, global price marker Brent dropped over 9% on Friday to $45.27 a barrel, its biggest single-day loss in 11 years. ties squeezed the information out from one of their relatives who visited the Pathanamthitta taluk hospital with symptoms similar to Covid-19. “One of the three went to a private hospital with symptoms of fever, dry cough. The other two visited another private hospital nearby and took medicines. Their travel history came into light only after one of their relatives arrived at the taluk hospital,” said an officer of the health department. Officials immediately tracked down the entire family and took swab samples, five of which tested positive. All three are undergoing treatment at the isolation ward of Pathanamthitta general hospital. The other two are elderly. They have been shifted to Kottayam Government Medical College. “The health department is doing contact tracing of these cases. They arrived at the Kochi air- port on February 29 — from Venice to Doha from where took a Kochi flight,” said state health minister K K Shailaja. In all, India now has 39 cases of coronavirus. Authorities also turned back cruise ship ‘MSC Lirica’ with a Panama flag at the New Mangalore Port. The new cases came on a day when Italy took the extraordinary step of putting a quarter of its population under lockdown — 16 mn people in 14 provinces — to contain the virus. P6,9,10,11 RANA KAPOOR SENT TO ED CUSTODY TILL MARCH 11 A N U R A D H A S H U K L A @ New Delhi THE Enforcement Directorate on Sunday arrested former Yes Bank co-founder Rana Kapoor after quizzing him for nearly 20 hours, while the CBI initiated probe against him for financial irregularities worth `4,200 crore. Among the charges are receiving alleged kickbacks from corporate entities for facilitating loans to them. On Sunday, Kapoor, 62, was produced before a holiday court in Mumbai, where he reportedly broke down, denying any wrongdoing. The court sent him to ED custody till March 11 for further questioning. Meanwhile, the CBI has also booked Rana Kapoor and DHFL promoter Kapil Wadhawan for alleged criminal conspiracy, cheating and corruption. The agency has alleged that Kapoor, 62, entered into a criminal conspiracy with Wadhawan for extending financial assistance to Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Ltd (DHFL) through Yes Bank in return for substantial undue benefits to himself and his family members through companies held by them. ED sources said Kapoor had set up about 20 shell companies, controlled by his wife Bindu and daughters Radha, Rakhi and Roshni. According to CBI’s FIR, the Yes Bank founder Rana Kapoor being taken to a Mumbai court on Sunday | PTI All banks safe: RBI RBI on Sunday reached out to people, allaying concerns over the financial health of banks , especially after the Yes Bank fiasco, with the assurance that their money is safe and that it is closely monitoring banks. “RBI closely monitors all the banks and hereby assures all depositors that there is no such concern of safety of their deposits in any bank,” the central bank said in a tweet scam started in 2018 when Yes Bank invested `3,700 crore in short-term debentures of the scam-hit DHFL. In return, Wadhawan allegedly “paid kickback of `600 ‘GUARDIAN OF THE CAUVERY DELTA’ crore” to Kapoor and family members in the form of loan to DoIT Urban Ventures (India). CBI alleges DHFL sanctioned `600 crore loan to DoIT on the basis of mortgage of sub-standard properties having meagre value and by considering its future conversation from agricultural land to residential land. According to sources, DHFL is yet to pay back `3,700 crore to Yes Bank. ED sources said they have trails of many such deals, done on a quid-pro-quo basis. The kickbacks collected thus were allegedly used to invest in properties in the name of Rana Kapoor’s wife and daughters in India as well as in the UK. The ED is also probing Rana Kapoor’s realty investments estimated at `5,000 crore. Meanwhile, Kapoor’s daughter Roshni was stopped at the Mumbai airport on Sunday, while she was boarding a flight to London. Sources said the ED stopped her as she is required to join the probe in a money laundering case against her father. The investigative agencies had already issued a lookout notice against the Kapoor family . The ED has already questioned his wife Bindu and recorded statements of Radha and Roshni, as well as Radha’s husband Aditya Khanna.
