At least 16 persons including its pilot Captain Deepak Vasanth Sathe and co-pilot have died in the accident while 40 suffered grievous injuries. The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals. An Air India Express spokesman told TNIE that he can’t reveal the names of the casualties as their families need to be informed first. However, an official statement by Air India Express said the flight IX 1344 from Dubai to Kozhikode, which is being conducting service as part of the Vande Bharath Mission, skidded off the runway while landing and fell into the side of the nearby Cross Belt Road along the Kondotty-Kunnumpuram stretch. “There were 174 passengers including 10 infants, two pilots and four cabin crew members on board the aircraft. As per the initial reports, rescue operations are on and passengers are being taken to hospital for medical care. No fire was reported at the time of the landing,” the statement said. The aircraft slipped and had a 35-metre deep fall, splitting it into two pieces, leaving the debris all over the runway . Though a thick smoke came out from the cockpit, no fire was reported. “The Kozhikode airport landing strip is a tabletop like the one at Mangaluru. If the engine of the plane had caught fire, the devastation would have been massive,” said local MLA T V Ibrahim. The incident brought back the nightmares of the May 22, 2010 crash of Air India Express flight IX 812 at Mangaluru International Airport after slipping off the table top runway and fell off the cliff and burst into flames killing 158 passengers. The CB-CID sleuths, on Friday, stumbled upon a piece of information that the Sri Lankan underworld criminal had undergone plastic surgery at a private hospital in Coimbatore some four months ago. Confirming this, CB-CID sources said that they came to the conclusion after perusing the old photog raphs of Lokka. “An inquiry with a private hospital in RS Puram brought to light that he had undergone plastic surgery to reshape his nose between February 19 and 23. At that time, he had told the hospital authorities that he was undergoing the surgery to act in movies,” they said, adding that he could have also been involved in some crimes related to impersonation. CB-CID IG K Shankar said that the actual reason behind him undergoing the surgery would be known only after the investigation. Meanwhile, the special team has conducted an inquiry with the hospital and a gym at Cheran Maanagar where Lokka used to frequent for more than five months between August 2019 and February 2020. Sources said that he joined the gym posing as Pradeep Singh along with Thiyaneshwaran, one of the suspects in the case. “Though Thiyaneshwaran discontinued going to the gym within a month, Lokka continued it until the gym was shut in February due to lockdown. The gym management has shared Lokka’s recent photographs and other details he had submitted,” they added. The CB-CID officials also obtained data including the fingerprint of Lokka from Puzhal prison where he was remanded in 2017 for illegally entering the country . The girlfriend of Angoda Lokka, Amani Dhanji (27) was taken to Chennai on Thursday evening and was lodged in Puzhal central prison. She is likely to be taken in custody for investigation next week. “After completing the preliminary investigation, we will initiate the legal process to take the three suspects into police custody next P4 week,” added Shankar. CHENNAI: In a setback to the men’s hockey team, five players, including skipper Manpreet Singh (in pic), tested positive for the coronavirus on Friday. As many as 18 people, including five women and two children, died and 48 went missing after a major landslide swept away a portion of the Pettimudi hills late on Thursday night, burying 80 houses along four lanes. Twelve people have been injured. Rescue work were continuing late into Friday night. The settlement belongs to the Nyayamakad tea estate of Kanan Devan Hills Plantations. Naturally the 80-odd resi- dents, mostly migrant tea plantation workers, were not prepared for such a disaster, which struck around midnight when most of them asleep. “The entire village was shattered,” said Deepan, a 25-yearold resident of Pettimudi. “Everything happened in a flash.” Deepan lay half-buried in the mud for nearly eight hours before a group of men, who too had survived, pulled him, his mother and two others out by around 6.30am on Friday . SII has tied up with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to be able to deliver up to 100 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines for India and other lower and middle-income countries. The vaccine candidate by Oxford University is under advanced stages of clinical trials in India and several other countries, and is likely to be available for public use in the first half of 2021.
