Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was as direct as possible during his interaction with his Chinese counterpart General Wei Fenghe, stating Indian forces are determined to protect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity . Drawing attention to the fact that Indian troops have always taken a responsible approach towards border management, Singh said China’s aggressive behaviour and attempts to unilaterally alter the status quo were in violation of the bilateral agreements. Experts say Rajnath Sigh’s is a strong message to China not to escalate matters as India has the capability to protect its interests and will not hesitate to hit back if its national interests are hurt. Indian forces’ strong response to the PLA’s aggression has rattled the Chinese leadership, says Lt Gen V K Chaturvedi (Retd). “The Chinese never expected such response from the Indian military which not only has dug in , its heels along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) but is also strengthening its positions.” He added India has successfully blocked China’s ‘salami slicing tactics’ and told the Chi- SITUATION IS VERY NASTY, SAYS TRUMP US President Donald Trump has said the situation along the India-China border has been ‘very nasty’ and that he would love to get involved and help. “We stand ready to help. Talking to TNIE on condition of anonymity an Army of, ficer said the Defence Minister’s statement has reaffirmed Indian stand on the territorial dispute, standoff and disengagement. “The Statement is a clear-cut red line on how much is acceptable and what is nonnegotiable,” the officer said. Meanwhile, in a predictable response, Beijing blamed New Delhi for the LAC flare-up. “The relations between the two countries have been severely affected by the border issue,” P7 said Wei Fenghe. Insurance body moves apex court against private hospitals for Covid ‘profiteering’ W I T THE NEW SUNDAY I S I S S U E H TH MAGA ZINE “We want to hand-hold and derisk investors, particularly in the time of Covid-19, and have rolled out a new industrial policy accordingly he told TNIE. ,” Gautham Reddy, at the announcement of the rankings, highlighted the efforts of the government in ensuring business reforms leading to actual ease of doing business India draws the red line, nudges China to behave UNION minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday asked the automobile and components industry to stop depending on imports and start using local substitutes. “I request you, don’t encourage imports,” he said at an event organised by the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India. However, automobile sector players feel it is easier said than done. “Can we delink from imports completely? Neither we can nor we should,” said Pawan Goenka, MD, Mahindra & Mahindra, who spoke at the same event. The two statements come in the backdrop of rising tension between India and China and a record fall in demand for automobile products owing to the economic distress induced by the pandemic. India’s automobile industry imports a large chunk of its component requirements from overseas with over 25%, valued at $4.2 billion, coming from China. Experts say any attempt at blocking Chinese items would hamper the supply chain. “We will have to continue importing to get things that some other countries can do better than us. We should avoid knee-jerk reaction or ask for bans of imports or any such acts” Goenka said. The rankings were supposed to be out by March 31, 2020 but were postponed because of the Covid-19 crisis. Expressing happiness over the state topping the rankings, Industries and Commerce Minister Mekapati Gautham Reddy said it is just the beginning and a lot more is to be achieved. BORDER TENSION A R S H A D K H A N @ New Delhi VOICES ministers of all states. The Department of Industrial Promotion and Inter nal Trade (DPIIT) of the Centre released the State Business Reform Action Plan 2020 (State BRAP) rankings, in which AP retained its place. The state stood on top along with Telangana in the previous EoDB rankings. The rankings represent the ease of doing business with increased transparency, 2 THE alleged profiteering by private hospitals in India through the treatment of Covid-19 patients has forced the statutory body of insurance companies to seek the Supreme Court’s intervention. In an affidavit filed before the apex court a few days ago, the General Insurance Council (GIC) alleged that private hospitals are overcharging insured patients, even in cases where there are no complications or preexisting illnesses. The GIC said its members have received more than 1 lakh Covid-related insurance claims so far. It warned that reckless profiteering by private hospitals, if left unchecked, will lead to insurance premiums shooting up in the near future. While there have been many complaints of private hospitals overcharging Covid-19 patients, this is the first time an insurance body has expressed concerns. “It is respectfully submitted that in order to bring confidence and have clarity on the billing structure, there is a need for proper monitoring of treatment costs by the private hospitals and take suitable action against the violators,” the affidavit said. The plea cites cases of hospitals over-charging insured patients. One of the cases mentioned in the affidavit is that of a Chennai hospital, which billed `14 lakh for the Covid treatment, including 35-day hospitalisation, of an insured person. When objected by the insurance company the , final cost, was brought down to less than `4.5 lakh. The GIC also alleged that private hospitals are charging higher than normal rates for consumables like PPE kits. Sudharshan has been lending a helping hand to his mother from when he was nine years old, as his father had passed away when he was just 13 months old. Though he went around selling tiffin, he never missed school. Now with no school due to Covid-19, and with little demand for the tiffin his mother cooks to sell, he has been going door-to-door selling fruits and vegetables. He has been supporting his mother Sujatha financially after noticing how she toils to ensure they get two square meals every day . Sujatha used to run a tiffin centre from their house and also work as a daily wage labourer to support Sudharshan and his four elder sisters, three of whom are now married. Before going to school, Sudharshan used to go door-to-door from 6 to 9 am to sell his mother’s idlis and dosas, and after school, he would go out to sell vegetables. P5 PLUS 12 PAGES
