The 81,000-sq-ft hospital, spread over 5.5 acres, was built in five months using prefabricated shipping containers. It could be India’s first hospital built from scratch to exclusively treat Covid patients. Tata Projects Ltd Deputy General Manager Gopinath Reddy handed over the keys to District Collector D Sajith Babu. The 551-bed Covid hospital built at Thekkil village in Kasaragod | EXPRESS CM Pinarayi Vijayan attended the function via a video call. On March 28, Tata Trusts chair man Ratan Tata had tweeted pledging `500 crore to buy personal protective equipment, respiratory systems, and testing kits, and set up modular treatment facilities for infected patients. Soon after, the Tata Group and Tata Trusts Executive got in touch with the Kerala government. “We proposed that a hospital should come up in Kasaragod and they accepted it,” said the chief minister. On April 9, the chief minister announced that the Tata Group would build a Covid hospital in Kasaragod. In five months, the group handed over the hospital to the government. Appreciating the group for its ‘business ethics’ and its social commitment, Pinarayi said the hospital would be an asset to Kerala’s healthcare sector and to Kasaragod, where there is no tertiary healthcare facility . The hospital, built using 128 customised shipping containers, has a canteen and rooms for doctors and nurses. The exhaust air from each room is treated before being let out. The earthwork on the rocky terrain started on April 9, just three says after the project was announced, said the collector. The Earth-moving Equipment Owners’ Association did the work free of cost. A 700-metre road was built to connect the hospital to the national highway he said. ,
