Already, as many as 25 states, including Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka have implemented the scheme. The scheme is being implemented in two phases in the State, said an official release. In the first phase, 32 districts will benefit from the scheme, and in the second, it will be extended to the remaining six districts – Thoothukudi, Thanjavur, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Madurai and Tiruvannamalai – from October 16. As per the scheme, people who have been transferred to other districts or states, can avail ration items, from any Fair Price Shop of their choice across the country , using their existing ration card issued in their home states. All one has to do is to do a biometric authentication on the electronic Point of Sales (ePoS) devices installed at the Fair Price Shops. Earlier, the card had to be surrendered and a fresh application needed to be given for transfer of ration card. Currently there are a , 34,773 fair price shops and 2.09 crore family cards in TN, with more than 6.75 crore beneficiaries. All ration cards in TN were converted to digital smart cards in 2017, and biometric authentication were operationalised. All existing ePoS devices were also upgraded and integrated with a biometric fingerprint reader. This was done across all Fair Price Shops, under Public Distribution System.
