It weakened and gained intensity on multiple occasions, and is expected to make a landfall post Wednesday midnight. At 8.30 pm on Wednesday, the storm was about 80 km east-southeast of Cuddalore, and about 160 km away from Chennai. It was moving northwestward at 14 kmph. Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been predicted in the Delta districts, northern parts of the State including Chennai, and in Puducherry . By 10.30 pm, according to the officials, the storm will intensify and wind speeds exceeding 120 kmph, Public holiday today in 16 districts of Tamil Nadu and in Puducherry gusting to 145 kmph, can be felt during the landfall. Cuddalore received the highest rainfall ahead of the cyclone, at 98 mm, followed by Puducherry at 82 mm, and Chennai and Karaikal at 69 mm each. Even before the actual storm hit, the city lost 80 trees to rain and strong winds. “A total of 1.21 lakh persons belonging to 34,389 families have been given shelter in 1,370 relief camps in Delta districts,” said minister RB Udhayakumar, who met the media late in the evening. “Two Naval ships have been roped in from Visakhapatnam, and are stationed off Tamil Nadu coasts, to deal with emergencies.” The minister said that 1.89 per cent of cellphone towers in the State have been affected by rains. “Of a total of 22,017 towers in the State, 286 have been affected. However, since there is no disruption caused to the Optical Fibre Cable netwo rk , c o m m u n i c at i o n channels remained open in all areas.” Of the 1,600 feeders of the electricity board, only 91 are under repair due to water stagnation and others are functioning well,” the minister added. CHEMBARAMBAKKAM OPENED FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2015 @ New Delhi A Supreme Court bench on Wednesday vacated a media gag order issued by the Andhra Pradesh High Court on reporting about a first information report (FIR) filed by the state’s Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) in the Amaravati land scam case. The case became a hot potato as the FIR names former advocate general Dammalapati Srinivas and two daughters of a senior apex court judge. However, the bench did not lift the high court’s stay into the ACB probe. A three-judge bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan issued notice and slated the matter for final hearing in January last week. It also asked the high court not to decide on Srinivas’ writ petition till it (SC bench) adjudicates the matter. During the hearing, senior advocate Rajeev Dhawan, appearing for the Andhra government, argued that the interim high court order barring probe and gagging the media, couldn’t have been passed at all. Speaking to reporters after meeting PWD officials, Palaniswami said the inflow into the lake as of 12 noon stood at 4,000 cusecs while 1,000 cusecs was being released. The storage level currently is at 21.5 feet. At around 6 pm, the release has been stepped up to 5,000 cusecs. With heavy rainfall, the inflow into the lake stood at 4,980 cusecs. From the Adhanur Lake, 2,000 cusecs is being released to Adyar River. In all, around 6,000 cusecs of water has been released into the Adyar. “Since the Adyar river has a capacity to carry about 60,000 cusecs of water, people need not fear about flooding. The government has taken all precautionary steps,” he said. Water stagnation was reported from over 30 low-lying areas in the city and the Corporation has been clearing it using high-power pumps. , Meanwhile, the Chief Minister declared a public holiday on Thursday in 16 districts, that are likely to be affected by the cyclone. “All government offices, statutory corporations, boards, banks etc., will be closed on November 26.
