They have been asked to join the probe by January 31 and directed to bring their passports along. Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government started to clear the Ghazipur agitation site. LoCs are used by immigration officials to prevent accused persons from leaving the country. The process of seizure of passports has been initiated by the home ministry and is a ma- jor decision, officials said, explaining that all people who have been named by Delhi Police in the FIRs will not be carrying Indian passports till the matter is pending. Officials said the decision was taken on Thursday morning by Union Home Minister Amit Shah who has been holding a series of meeting with top officials of the Home Ministry and Delhi police since Tuesday when the large scale violence took place in the national capital during the farmers tractor rally. The unemployed youth in Telangana have long been waiting for this one promise to be fulfilled. Back in December, 2018, a couple of days ahead of wrapping up his campaign for the Assembly elections, the Chief Minister had announced that he would provide an unemployment allowance to the youth after retaining power. He said this while releasing the TRS manifesto during a public meeting at the Secunderabad Parade Grounds. As there has been a delay, the TRS gover nment has come under attack from the Opposition time and again. Students, too, had turned restive and began making loud demands for its announcement. The Chief Minster, as promised, had addressed the three major issues of Telangana — drinking water, irrigation and power — in just six years, the MAUD Minister said. “There used to be dharnas for water and power when Telangana was part of Andhra Pradesh. The Kukatpally nala (drain), responsible for 75 per cent of all the waste flowing into the Hussainsagar, continues to drain 30-40 per cent of its untreated sewage into the lake, according to a report submitted in the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Thursday by a Joint Committee of experts. The NGT had constituted the committee last year to look into various aspects concerning the pollution and protection of the Hussainsagar, in a petition filed by lake protection activist Lubna Sarwath. This is the second such report by the committee. Missing girls: HC gives TS 2 weeks to form welfare panels The committee noted that untreated sewage from the Banjara, Yousufguda and Balkapur nalas gets discharged into the lake during peak hours (7 am-12 pm) and the monsoon. It reported that untreated sewage has been mixing with treat- ed waste from the Picket nala’s sewage treatment plant (STP). During an inspection, the Balkapur nala STP was found to be non-functional, thereby causing the untreated sewage to flow into the Hussainsagar. The committee also noted that even though the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) officials had informed them at a meeting in March, 2020, that the lake’s surplus weir — which was damaged by the government — would be repaired after the monsoon, nothing was done to this effect when the committee had checked in DeCONTINUED ON P3 cember. EXPRESSING concern over the future of thousands of missing children, the Telangana High Court on Thursday granted the State government two weeks to constitute child welfare committees in all the 33 districts. It also told the government to appoint members to the committees and file a compliance report before the court. “Why is the Telangana government not doing the needful? Why is it exhibiting such laxity in implementing court orders? The government should know that it is dealing with girl children, who are the most susceptible and do not have a voice against their perpetrators who force them into prostitution. Unless the highest-level police officer monitors this issue, justice cannot be delivered to the missing children,” a division bench observed. Impleading the Ministry of Women and Child Welfare as a co-respondent in the case, the bench directed it to take concrete steps on the issue. It also felt the need to give top priority to the usage of information technology (IT) in the case, and directed the authorities concerned to use IT for tracing missing girls. The bench told them to use facial recognition software in order to reunite the children with their parents. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Hima Kohli and Justice B Vijaysen Reddy passed these , orders in a batch of petitions which sought directions to the government to appoint a special police wing to reopen the cases of missing children across the State. The PIL, filed by Prajwala, an NGO represented by its general secretary Sunitha Krishnan, submitted that child welfare committees exist only in the 10 old districts. CONTINUED ON P5
