But I certainly do not hate them. I will debate, discuss and disagree with them. But I will always smile at them because at the end of the day, they are our brothers. P5 FACE-OFF P’Thitta: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday asked why the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government had desisted from making a law against ‘love jihad’ when such cases are increasing in Kerala. “Both LDF and UDF are playing vote bank politics in the state. Though the Kerala High Court in 2009 asked the state government to enact a law against ‘love jihad’, both LDF and UDF did not do anything,” he said. He was reacting to CPM central committee member and Industries Minister E P Jayarajan’s public statement that he would never contest in elections again. “Party leaders and individuals have their own opinions regarding such issues. Party will consider such opinions. In the end, party will take a decision and all will have to toe the party line,” he said. The decision seeks to arrest a steep decline in the number of people getting vaccinated against the backdrop of sharp rise in number of cases amid the outbreak of the second wave. Till Thursday, over 63 million people have been vaccinated, translating into just 4.5 doses per 100 people. The fresh measure was recommended by the National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration and was taken after detailed deliberations with all states on Wednesday the health ministry , said. The rationale behind the decision is to optimally utilise all vaccination centres for increased coverage. Cases have been growing exponentially since March, with Thursday’s 72,330 marking the highest single-day infection tally since October. While the first week of March recorded an average of 16,740 cases daily , the numbers rose four-fold to 62,000 by the last week. The finance ministry on Thursday rescinded its controversial order slashing interest rates on small savings within 12 hours of issuing it, following social media backlash, panic calls from BJP functionaries of poll-bound states, and a sharply worded directive from M A Baby, CPM politburo member When they got caught, they are trying to divert attention by raising issues such as data leak. There is no data leak in the information we shared Ramesh Chennithala, Opposition Leader ‘Cover all eligible’ The Centre has urged all states to focus on vaccinating the priority groups. They have been asked to actively identify districts with surge and inoculate all eligible people the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). On Wednesday evening, the ministry had issued an order cutting interest rates applicable on various small savings schemes by 50-110 basis points for April-June 2021 period. The decision, announced a day before phase-2 voting in Bengal and Assam, drew widespread criticism. E x p r e s s N e w s Se r v i c e @ Kolkata/Guwahati A high voter turnout of 80.43% and 77.21% was recorded in West Bengal and Assam, respectively, on Thursday but the highlight of the second phase of polling was the high drama in Nandigram, followed by Mamata Banerjee accusing the BJP of rigging the polls 47%: Hinduism biggest gainer in conversion WHILE the BJP, in its election manifesto, has promised an Uttar Pradesh model law against forceful religious conversion and ‘love jihad’ in Kerala to woo Hindu and Christian voters, the data sourced by TNIE from the government gazettes paint an alto gether dif ferent picture. According to official figures for the year 2020, the biggest gainer – in terms of new converts – was Hinduism. People who embraced Hinduism constituted 47 per cent of religious conversions in Kerala during the oneyear period under reference. Of the total 506 people who registered their change of religion with the government, 241 were those who converted from Christianity or Islam to Hinduism. A total of 144 persons adopted Islam whereas Christianity received 119 new believers in the year, shows the data. ● More on P7 18 pages, including 4 pages of KOCHI Express charisma, talent, effort Dadasaheb Phalke Award for Rajini E XPR E SS N E WS S E RVIC E @ Chennai ACTOR Rajinikanth will be awarded the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke award for 2019, as announced by Union I&B Minister Prakash Javdekar on Thursday He said, “A jury con. sisting of Asha Bhonsle, Mohanlal, Biswajit Chatterjee, Shankar Mahadevan and Subhash Ghai unanimously decided to nominate Rajinikanth for the award, and we’ve accepted it. For the last 50-odd years, he has been the uncrowned king of cinema. Through his charisma, talent, and efforts, he has made a place for himself in the hearts of people.” The actor now joins an illus- trious list of film personalities to have been conferred this award, including his mentor K Balachander, Sivaji Ganesan, Satyajit Ray, Amitabh Bachchan, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Gulzar, Lata Mangeshkar, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, and K Vishwanath. He is set to become the fifth star from South Indian cin- ema after Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Sivaji Ganesan, Adoor and Rajkumar to be awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke. Having begun his career with a cameo in K Balachander’s Apoorva Raagangal (1975), Rajinikanth went on to act in over 160 films across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam, and English languages. Tasting success as a stylish antagonist in many films like Aadu Puli Aatam, 16 Vayathinile, and Moondru Mudichu, he made the transition to ‘hero’ roles with Bairavi (1978), which was also the first film to give him the ‘Superstar’ sobriquet that would later become so iconic. THE issue of bogus voters and multiple entries, numbering as high as 4.34 lakh, raised by Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala, has become the focal point of this elections as campaigning entered its final phase. Corroborating the allegations raised by Chennithala, the name of the late CPM leader P K Kunhananthan was found to be figuring in the voter list in the Koothuparamba constituency, pushing the LDF on the defensive. After the information came out, following a complaint filed by a Congress activist in the constituency, the Election Commission of India (ECI) said in a statement that Kunjananthan’s name was removed from the electoral rolls. KERALA ASSEMBLY CPM politburo memELECTIONS ber M A Baby, meanwhile, alleged the Opposition leader leaked the personal details of 4.34 lakh voters, whose names were duplicated on the electoral rolls, through the Singapore-based www.operationtwins.com portal. “The IP address shows the portal is based in Singapore 2021 and the opposition leader handed over the personal information to the foreign-based portal without the consent of people. This raises ethical and legal issues,” Baby said in Thiruvananthapuram. Chennithala, in a Facebook post, said the CPM’s response shows its panic and nervousness after getting caught redhanded in its act of systematic creation of bogus voters and multiple entries which the party used to win elections in the past. “When they got caught, they are trying to divert attention by raising issues such as data ● More on P7 leak,” he wrote.
