In a clear indication, senior leader and national executive member K E Ismail wrote to the central leadership on Sunday against state secretary Kanam Rajendran. In his letter, Ismail said Kanam’s remarks against general secretary D Raja dented the party’s image. Two senior national leaders — the other being Annie Raja — were insulted by the state leadership. He blamed Kanam’s arrogance for the party’s embarrassment. Kanam who criticised Raja for violating the party norm has done the same wrong, Ismail alleged. Raja was criticised at the CPI state executive and state council meetings for justifying Annie’s allegation that an RSS gang is functioning within the state police. The national executive too observed that Annie’s remarks were not in line with party norms. However, while speaking to mediapersons after the national executive, Raja said police inaction would be criticised, whether it is in Kerala or in UP. According to Ismail, Kanam presented his personal opinion as that of the party’s. He tries to create an impression that he himself is the party. Kanam and some other leaders revealed to the media the critical observations in the state council and executive over the statements of Annie and Raja. It was their memory that prodded Sajid to quit his high-flying job at the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) and return to Chitarpur, his village in Jharkhand, to start a Schoolasium – a portmanteau word coined by combining school and gymnasium – to change the way the underprivileged were taught. Seven years on, Schoolasium has turned into a resource centre for schools attempting to emulate its experiential learning model. Sajid claimed his model has been adopted by over 120 government and private schools in Gumla, Palamu, Koderma, Hazaribagh, Ramg arh, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad and even in some districts of Bihar. At Schoolasium, instructors make students exercise their brains through practical lessons, similar to the way physical workouts build body muscles. This teaching meth- odology is called Maker Oriented Pedagogy (MOP), which is a play-based learning system seeking to make children problem solvers through practical life lessons as opposed to the conventional one-way knowledge dissemination from teacher to students. Recalling how lack of support from their school stopped many of his classmates from realising their true potential, Sajid said: “I returned to my village to change the learning process. Things here are not in tune with the technological transitions across the world. I want the learning process in rural areas to be vibrant.” Sajid studied at a local madarsa till class VI, before joining the Chitarpur High School. After doing his Masters from IISc, Bengaluru, he went to Germany to earn his PhD and returned to India in 2012, after which he landed a job with the NAL. However, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, who was in the race for chief ministership, left the meeting without making any statement, while BJP’s state unit president C R Paatil had earlier said he was not a contender for the top post. In Uttarakhand too, the BJP chose Pushkar Singh Dhami as chief minister though he had no ministerial experience. Patel will be the first-ever CM from Ahemadabad. He won the 2017 Assembly elections from Ghatlodia, defeating Congress candidate Shashikant Patel by a margin of over one lakh votes, the highest winning margin in that elections. The guidelines shared with the Supreme Court came after the court’s June 30 verdict, which had sought clear steps to simplify the norms for issuance and correction of death certificates and official documents. The certificates must state upfront the exact cause of death, that is, ‘death due to Covid’, to enable dependents to get benefits of welfare schemes, the SC had directed. To determine the benchmark, the Centre’s affidavit cited a study by Indian Council of Medical Research, which found that 95% of deaths take place within 25 days of being tested Covid positive. “To make the scope broader and more inclusive, deaths occurring within 30 days from the date of testing or from the date of being clinically determined as a COVID-19 case, will be treated as ‘deaths due to COVID-19, even if the death takes place outside the hospital/ in-patient facility .” Also, Covid cases admitted in hospital/in-patient facility who continued as the same admission beyond 30 days and later died, shall be treated as Covid deaths.
