Forget the short list, he was not even on the speculated long list to become outgoing chief minister Vijay Rupani’s successor. The BJP on Sunday pulled a rabbit out of the hat by giving the chief ministerial baton to political greenhorn Bhupendra Patel, a first-term MLA with no ministerial experience. Seen as a protégé of UP Governor Anandiben Patel, he represents her Ghatlodia seat in the Assembly. Patel, 59, later met Governor Acharya Devvrat along with Rupani to take stake his claim for the hot seat. He is also associated with a couple of Patidar outfits as well. A civil engineer by qualification and builder by profession, he will take the oath of office and secrecy on Monday . The soft-spoken, low profile Patel will now lead the state BJP to polls in 2022. “The selection of Bhupendra Patel is a master stroke of Anandiben Patel. The BJP has killed many birds with one stone. It was their memory that prodded Sajid to quit his high-flying job at the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) and return to Chitarpur, his village in Jharkhand, to start a Schoolasium – a portmanteau word coined by combining school and gymnasium – to change the way the underprivileged were taught. Seven years on, Schoolasium has turned into a resource centre for schools attempting to emulate its experiential learning model. Sajid claimed his model has been adopted by over 120 government and private schools in Gumla, Palamu, Koderma, Hazaribagh, Ramgarh, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad and even in some districts of Bihar. At Schoolasium, instructors make students exercise their brains through practical lessons, similar to the way physical workouts build body muscles. This teaching method- ology is called Maker Oriented Pedagogy (MOP), which is a play-based learning system seeking to make children problem solvers through practical life lessons as opposed to the conventional one-way knowledge dissemination from teacher to students. Recalling how lack of support from their school stopped many of his classmates from realising their true potential, Sajid said: “I returned to my village to change the learning process. Things here are not in tune with the technological transitions across the world. I want the learning process in rural areas to be vibrant.” Sajid studied at a local madarsa till class VI, before joining the Chitarpur High School. After doing his Masters from IISc, Bengaluru, he went to Germany to earn his PhD and returned to India in 2012, after which he landed a job with the NAL. His exposure to varied teaching models made him realise that a combination of poor academic condition and lack of access to educational infrastructure was the reason behind students failing to realise their full potential. The proposal to elevate Bhupendra Patel was moved by Rupani, after which almost all lawmakers fell in line. Most of the 112 MLAs of the party in the 182-member Assembly were present at the meeting. However, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, who was in the race for chief ministership, left the meeting without making any statement, while BJP’s state unit president C R Paatil had earlier said he was not a contender for the top post. In Uttarakhand too, the BJP chose Pushkar Singh Dhami as chief minister though he had no ministerial experience. Patel will be the first-ever CM from Ahemadabad. The reaction from the f l a m b o ya n t T h i r u v a n a n thapuram MP, considered the intellectual face of the Congress, comes at a time when the party’s leaders in the state have taken up cudgels against the Sangh Parivar for the inclusion of RSS ideologues in the syllabus for the post-graduate students of K a n n u r University . Tharoor, a celebrated author and orator, recalled that he had quoted at length on Veer Savarkar and M S Golwalkar in his books and then refuted them. The Congress’ member of Parliament said it is foolish to believe that ignorance of someone’s ideas will help one defeat them. “Some friends disapprove of my stand that academic freedom requires us to read, understand & debate every point of view, including those we disagree with. If we don’t read Savarkar & Golwalkar, on what basis will we oppose their ideas? #KannurUniversity also teaches Gandhi & Tagore. Intellectual freedom is far too important a value in our society to be sacrificed at the altar of party politics,” he tweeted. Governor Arif Mohammed Khan had also supported the Kannur University for introducing the chapters on Saturday though the move drew flak , from senior Congress leader V M Sudheeran.
