Defence spokesperson in Jammu, Lt-Col Devender Anand, said there was a heavy exchange of fire between the militants and the army troops carrying out a counter-terror operation near Nar Khas forest area in Mendhar sub-division of Poonch. While the JCO was killed, the critically injured soldier was evacuated to a military hospital, where he succumbed. Additional ar my personnel were rushed to the area to tighten the siege and prevent the militants from escaping. Sources said the place where the encounter broke out is part of a forest area that runs through Dera Ki Gali in Surankote of Poonch, where a fierce gunfight had taken place between terrorists and the army on Monday morning in which five soldiers, including a JCO, were killed. Hailing from Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh and incharge of Andhra Odisha Border (AOB) Special Zonal Committee, the 55-year-old was taking treatment for his chronic illness somewhere in south Bastar’s remote jungle of Pamed, 450 km south of Raipur. He was popularly known as Saket in AOB. He was a member of the Maoist central team that negotiated peace talks with the government of Andhra Pradesh in Sept 2004. He was also overseeing the Maoist technical wing. In 2016, he managed to escape from a fierce encounter with Greyhounds at Odisha’s Malkangiri, in which 28 Maoists were killed. RK’s wife Padma was a former Maoist, while their son Munna was killed in an alleged encounter in 2016.
