At least, that is the civic body’s plan as it gears up to undertake the Ezh Azhakilekk En Kozhikode campaign, under which it will implement a series of programmes to provide people a respite from their busy lives and ultimately improve the corporation’s happiness index. The corporation is working out the nitty-gritty of the campaign under four components — colourful childhood, vibrant youth, peaceful retired life and dignified death — at the initial stage, said health standing committee chief K Jayasree. “Happiness index is a comprehensive scientific measurement of public happiness and the aspects of sustainability and resilience. We will be implementing various short and long-term projects under each component,” she said. These include playgrounds fo r k i d s, c u l t u r a l p ro grammes for youth, places to relax for the grown-ups and the like. Jayasree said they will also implement initiatives to bring about change in public attitude. ● More on P4 W I T H T H I S I SSU E Larger12 PAGESLife Than PLUS Amid the controversy over a Shivalinga being found at the Gyanvapi Mosque in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi, hundreds of VHP and Bajrang Dal activists on Saturday laid siege to Srirangapatna in Karnataka, claiming the Jamia Masjid in the fort town was built over a Hanuman temple. The activists demanded they be allowed to offer pujas at the Mula Anjaneyaswamy temple, which they claimed is situated in the premises of the mosque. The protest in Tipu Sultan’s capital also came when a controversy is raging over the secular credentials of the Muslim ruler. The protesters said the 18th century king razed a Hanuman temple situated at the spot and built Jamia Masjid. On Saturday, the activists were stopped from heading towards the masjid with police clamping prohibitory orders. The police also barricaded all the roads leading to the mosque, maintained by the Archeologi- cal Survey of India. The activists said two of their men managed to break through the security cordon and chant Hanuman Chalisa at the temple inside the mosque, a claim contested by police officials. Members of the Bajrang Dal blocked the busy BengaluruMysuru and Mysuru-Pandavapura highways, demanding they be allowed to proceed towards the mosque. Police later removed the protesters to a nearby town, clearing traffic. Despite the commotion outside, the madrasa situated on the mosque premises functioned as usual, leading to loud protests by the activists. VHP Mandya district secretary Sunil Kumar alleged the madarasa inmates and others disfigured the motifs on the stones to destroy any evidence of a Hanuman temple. He demanded a video survey be done, like in the Gyanvapi case. The activists also set a 25-day ultimatum to the district administration to give a detailed reply to their petition. Hindu outfits’ campaign to claim the Srirangapatna Jamia Masjid comes amid the call by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat to refrain from such actions. Speaking at an event last Thursday, Bhagwat had questioned the need to “look for a Shivalinga in every mosque”, referring to the Gyanvapi controversy. “One shouldn’t raise a new issue every day. Why escalate fights? What happens in mosques is also a form of prayer... We are not opposed to any form of worship,” he had said Govt orders ‘rape culture’ ad be taken down E x p r ess Ne w s S e r v i c e @ New Delhi A day after the Delhi Commission for Women flagged advertisement videos of a perfume brand for promoting rape culture, the Centre on Saturday directed Twitter and YouTube to take them down at once. “It has come to the notice of the ministry that an inappropriate and derogatory advertisement of a deodorant is circulating on social media. So, it has asked Twitter and YouTube to immediately pull it down,” said an official of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. In letters to Twitter and YouTube, the ministry said the videos were Two minors arrested over gangrape of T’gana teen Hyderabad police on Saturday apprehended two minors, including the son of a Telangana Wakf Board official, in connection with the gangrape of a 17-year-old girl inside a car after a pub party “detrimental to the portrayal of women in the interest of decency and morality” and in violation of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021. The Advertising Standards Coun- cil of India (ASCI), a self-regulatory body of advertisement professionals, said it “was potentially in serious violation” of its code. While the videos have drawn criticism from many quarters for encouraging violence against women, the strongest reaction was from the Delhi Commission for Women. “Fuming at cringe worthy ads of the perfume ‘Shot’. They show toxic masculinity in its worst form and clearly promote gangrape culture! The company owners must be held accountable. Have issued notice to Delhi Police and written letter to I&B Minister seeking FIR and strong action,” its chairperson Swati Maliwal tweeted. CPM Ekm leaders asked to explain rout E x p r ess Ne w s S e r v i c e @Kochi/T’Puram Having lost its face in the Thrikkakara assembly bypoll, the CPM is to conduct an internal inquiry into the reasons behind its humongous defeat. If the mood within the party is anything to go by, the local leadership will have some serious explaining to do. A decision in this regard was taken at the district secretariat meeting held in Kochi for two hours on Saturday. Industries and Law Minister P Rajeeve, the mastermind behind the LDF campaign in Thrikkakara, attended the meeting along with M Swaraj. The district leadership is expected to submit its report before the state leadership within a week. “The district leadership will submit a detailed report on the vote share and comparison with CPM votes polled in 2021. The party is also looking into the huge difference between the projected margin and final figures,” said a local leader. The mood within the party is against the district committee and the masterminds behind the campaigning. “The party knew it was a losing fight...however, this huge loss was beyond our estimate. The figures given by the district committee to the state committee were not connected to ground realities,’’ a state committee member told TNIE. “There is certainly some disconnect and leaders who were in charge will have to explain that,” he added. Going by the 2021 example, when disciplinary actions were taken against 12 senior leaders after the assembly elections, similar steps are likely this time. In 2021, action was taken against C K Mani Shankar and K D Vincent based on the report by Gopi Kottamurickal who probed the party’s poll defeat in Tripunithura and Thrikkakara constitu● More on P4 encies.
