The activists demanded they be allowed to offer pujas at the Mula Anjaneyaswamy temple, which they claimed is situated in the premises of the mosque. The protest in Tipu Sultan’s capital also came when a controversy is raging over the secular credentials of the Muslim ruler. The protesters said the 18th century king razed a Hanuman temple situated at the spot and built Jamia Masjid. On Saturday, the activists were stopped from heading towards the masjid with police clamping prohibitory orders. The police also barricaded all the roads leading to the mosque, maintained by the Archeologi- cal Survey of India. The activists said two of their men managed to break through the security cordon and chant Hanuman Chalisa at the temple inside the mosque, a claim contested by police officials. Members of the Bajrang Dal blocked the busy BengaluruMysuru and Mysuru-Pandavapura highways, demanding they be allowed to proceed towards the mosque. Police later removed the protesters to a nearby town, clearing traffic. Despite the commotion outside, the madrasa situated on the mosque premises functioned as usual, leading to loud protests by the activists. VHP Mandya district secretary Sunil Kumar alleged the madarasa inmates and others disfigured the motifs on the stones to destroy any evidence of a Hanuman temple. He demanded a video survey be done, like in the Gyanvapi case. The activists also set a 25-day ultimatum to the district administration to give a detailed reply to their petition. Hindu outfits’ campaign to claim the Srirangapatna Jamia Masjid comes amid the call by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat to refrain from such actions. Speaking at an event last Thursday, Bhagwat had questioned the need to “look for a Shivalinga in every mosque”, referring to the Gyanvapi controversy. “One shouldn’t raise a new issue every day.
