Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao took on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was just a few miles away daring him to pull , down the Telangana government just as the ruling BJP had done in Maharashtra— and promising a “revolution” if that came about. PM Modi had landed in Hyderabad in the afternoon to participate in the BJP’s national executive. He headed straight to the venue—HICC, in the city’s IT corridor—in a chopper. The stage there had already seen belligerent words from BJP leaders, as they engaged in political volleys with KCR. The TRS, rightly interpreting the BJP’s choice of Hyderabad for its national executive as a politically loaded one, decided to go big with its own counter-show. Hours before the PM arrived in the city , KCR and his minister-son K T Rama Rao organised a grand welcome for Opposition presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha. It rained pink petals, flags and confetti as a convoy carrying Rao and Sinha drove from Begumpet airport to the Jalavihar guest house on Necklace road, trailed by hundreds of bikes. And then, as KCR addressed his party MPs and MLAs, the barbs flew thick and fast. He called the caravan of BJP leaders “political tourists” and taunted PM Modi about the falling rupee and asked why he was avoiding talking about what was his pet subject when the UPA was ruling. “Several great Union ministers who are here are saying they will topple the TRS government. We are also waiting for it so that we can be free. Later we will bring you down in Delhi,” Rao thundered. At the BJP venue, party orators had already lit up the stage with some fiery words. Referring to the glaring absence of the CM among the dignitaries who welcomed PM Modi, Union minister Smriti Irani called it an insult to the Constitution. As the political fisticuffs continued late into the night on Saturday it will be Modi’s , tur n to take centrestage on Sunday as he is set to address a public meeting in Secunderabad. The BJP promises that will signal “the death-knell” for TRS’s dynasP5,9 tic rule. THE Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Saturday handed over the case related to the murder of a 54-year-old chemist at Amravati in Maharashtra to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), three days after it entrusted the federal organisation with probing the gruesome killing of a tailor in Rajasthan’s Udaipur. “MHA handed over the investigation of the case relating to the barbaric killing of Umesh Kolhe in Amravati, Maharashtra, on June 21 to the NIA. THE Enforcement Directorate (ED) is likely to file a money laundering case against AltNews co-founder Mohammed Zubair after Delhi Police found he received donations from Pakistan and Syria. The federal financial investigating agency has asked the Delhi Police to hand over the FIR, remand papers and account-related information of the Zubair’s website. Earlier, a Delhi court dismissed Zubair’s bail plea and sent him to 14-day judicial custody, citing the nature and gravity of the offences against him and observing that the matter is at the initial stage of investigation. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Snigdha Sarvaria pronounced the judgment after the open court reconvened late in the evening. Delhi Police had produced Zubair before the court on the expiry of his five-day custodial interrogation. The police said he was not required for custodial interrogation but sought his judicial custody . Zubair was arrested on June 27 for an “objectionable tweet” he posted in 2018. After studying the nature of tremors and their increasing frequency, the experts have forecast at least a 100 vibrations in the region in the coming days, about which the government needs to take a serious view to mitigate casualties in case of a larger seismic disaster. While they said since earthquakes are up to magnitude 3.0 on the Richter Scale there is nothing to worry about, they also cautioned against ignoring the tremors. They said the floods, landslides and now the earthquakes in the region are a warning sign to be cautious, while pointing out that the fragile Western Ghats region is not safe. These observations have been made by a team of experts which visited the region over the past few days to take stock of the situation. Their observations are based on the assessments they made over the last week and on the number of e a r t h q u a k e s t h a t h av e occurred. Locals fear earthquakes could trigger landslides in Kodagu The visiting experts were seismologists, disaster management cell officials and local administration officials. The team has also expressed concerns over the earthquakes during the monsoon period. “At present they are occurring after the rain. The rainfall also being recorded in the region is around 6 cm. We are worried if rain of 12-15 cm occurs for 3-4 days and an earthquake occurs at the same time. Then there will be more disasters. Unable to do anything to avoid this, all we are doing is praying,” said a local administration official. An official from National Centre of Seismology, who wished not to be named, said: “If the number of earthquakes and vibrations intensifies, then it is a matter of concern. Then there is an urgent need to study the waves and the faults. However, the government should not relax. A close monitoring of the situation is required.” CONTINUED ON : P5
