The search operations were conducted in at least 40 places in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore and Vellore. Undeclared cash of `26 crore and gold jewellery worth more than `3 crore were seized during the operation, the I-T department said. In the case of film production houses, the actual amount realized from the sale of films was much more than the amount shown in the books of accounts, hinting at possible tax evasion, sources said. The unaccounted income was then used for undisclosed investments and making undeclared payments, an I-T department spokesperson said. During the past month, Kerala reported 2,347 cases a day on an average while Maharashtra had 2,135 cases, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said in his letter to these states. Highlighting the situation in Delhi, Bhushan said 8.2% of all new cases reported in the country over the past week were from Delhi where the test positivity rate shot up from 5.9% last week to 9.86% on Friday . “It is critical for the states to ensure adequate testing is undertaken in all the districts of the state while maintaining the recommended share of RT-PCR and antigen tests. The state must also closely monitor dis- tricts reporting higher cases, positivity rates, and clusters to prevent further spread of infection and effective case management,” Bhushan said. The official also warned that the upcoming festivals could lead to mass congregations of people in different parts of the country and potentially facilitate the transmission of infectious diseases, including Covid-19. He urged the states to ensure Covid-appropriate behaviour is followed in crowded places such as markets, inter-state bus stands, schools, colleges, and railway stations. He also emphasized the need to follow the five-fold strategy of test, track, treat, vaccinate, and adherence to Covid protocols. NEARLY 47 per cent inmates in 25 jails of Punjab are addicted to drugs, according to a first-ofits-kind screening of the prisoners. As per the screening of about 30,000 inmates in 25 prisons, approximately 14,000 prisoners have been found to be addicted to drugs, according to the drive done last month. The maximum number of 2,200 drug addicts has been found in Ludhiana Central Jail, followed by Kapurthala 2,000, undergo de-addiction programmes. The idea is to reform and rehabilitate prisoners who are addicted to drugs,’’ according to a senior prison department official. Taking note of the huge number of drug addict inmates, the state government has set up a special task force to check drug menace.
