Dhankhar, former West Bengal governor, got an overwhelming 528 votes against Alva’s182. Lok Sabha general secretary Utpal K Singh said 725, or 92.4%, of the 780 MPs cast their votes, 15 of which were deemed invalid. The term of Venkaiah Naidu will end on August 10. The vice-president is elected indirectly by an electoral college comprising Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs, including nominated members. Voting is via secret ballot and the process involves the proportional representation system using a single transferable vote. Dhankhar, the first Jat to occupy the post, was born at Kithana in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district. He graduated in physics and later law, and practised in the Rajasthan High Court and later in the Supreme Court. In 1989, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Jhunjhunu. The Centre said that Telangana has been reporting an average of 678 daily for the past one month, contributing to 5.7 per cent of the country’s weekly new cases in the week ending August 5. The Centre also said that four districts -- Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medchal Malkajgiri and Warangal Urban have reported an increase in cases in the week ending August 5, compared to the previous week, and warned of a possible surge in the coming festive season. Rao on Saturday dashed off a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who would be chairing the meeting, to this effect. “I do not find it useful to attend the 7th Governing Council meeting of Niti Aayog and (I am) staying away from it as a mark of strong protest against the present trend of Central government discriminating against the States and not treating them as equal partners in our collective effort to make India a strong and developed country”, Rao said in his letter to the Prime Minister. “Strong and economically vibrant States alone could make India a strong country,” he wrote. Speaking to reporters at Pragathi Bhavan later, the Chief Minister said: “States have not been co-opted in the preparation of agenda of Niti Aayog meetings. The rigmarole of Niti Aayog meetings leave little scope for meaningful dialogue, as participating Chief Ministers are given hardly a few min- Niti Aayog rebuts KCR’s charges In its rebuttal, the Niti Aayog said Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar attended the preparatory meeting held in June at Dharamshala. It also said that: Centre consistently supporting States in financial matters, including flagship schemes / programmes Detailed consultations held in June ahead of Sunday’s meeting; CM’s claim that states were not co-opted incorrect. Overall allocation under centrally sponsored schemes increased from `2,03,740 crore in 2015-16 to `4,42,781 crore in 2022-23, in addition to hike in awards under 14th Finance Commission.
