ANCIENT TRADITION Iconic Hampi monument, birthplace of Dasara, faces neglect A M I T S U PA D H Y E @ Hubballi LOCAL residents have long been complaining that the original site in Hampi where Naada Habba, popularly known as Mysuru Dasara began, is being neglected. Their demand is that the iconic Mahanavami Dibba monument should be lit up and awareness boards about its glorious past must be displayed. Built in 16th century by kings of the Vijayanagara empire, the Mahanavami Dibba was the centre of attraction from where the king and his family used to watch the Dasara parade. The king used to alight from his elephant on the mighty structure to join other members of the royal family. The Dasara parade of Hampi was similar to the present-day Dasara, but had an additional attraction of military might of the Vijayanagara kingdom. After the fall of Vijayanagara empire in 1565, the Wadiyars of Mysuru who were earlier part of the Vijayanagara kingdom, carried forward the tradition fused to sign the resolution. The party leadership in Delhi feels the MLAs avoided the central observers on the direction of Gehlot. This is being seen as an open rebellion by Gehlot against the Gandhi family and the party’s central leadership. Congress leaders in Delhi said the party has started looking for an alternative candidate for the post of Congress president. There are four days left for the nominations to close for the party’s presidential election. Nominations for the presidential elections close on September 30. The Congress Legislature Party meeting, which was called on Sunday had to be can, celed as more than 90 MLAs loyal to Gehlot threatened to resign. Gehlot loyalists Shanti Dhariwal and Chief Whip Mahesh Joshi are being seen by the high command as the key players in the drama. Gehlot met Kharge in the hotel he was staying on Monday afternoon. Before leaving for Delhi, Kharge said, “everyone will have to be on the same page with Congress president’s decision. There has to be unity and discipline in the party unit.” Dhariwal later alleged that Maken was part of a plot to unseat Gehlot as CM. Annually lakhs , of people visit Mysuru where Dasara is celebrated for 10 days. Activists in Hampi say the government must take up programmes during Navaratri to keep the ancient tradition alive. “We have been demanding for years that the government must recognise and celebrate the story of Mahanavami Dibba of Hampi as it is the original site of Dasara. Historical records show that the Mysuru kings carried forward the tradition of Vijayanagara kings,” said a social activist. An official of the Hampi Management Authority points out there were plans earlier to organise celebrations at the monument during Dasara. “But a certain section of historians had opposed the idea due to the sensitive structure of the monument that was built in 1513 AD. However, there should be programmes involving various government agencies, including the tourism department, to popularise the monument which gave birth to Dasara in the state,” the official said. of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. “Our policies will not be influenced by the politics of religion, caste or creed. Centre told us to block entire a/cs: Twitter to HC E X P R E SS N E WS S E R V I C E @Bengaluru MICRO-blogging site Twitter has informed the Karnataka High Court on Monday that the Union government was asking it to block entire accounts of holders rather than just their tweets because of their political content. Senior counsel for Twitter, Arvind Datar, argued that the micro-blogging site was asked to block entire accounts although Section 69A of the IT Act permitted only to block information through Blocking Orders under the section of the Act. Besides, about 50-60 per cent of the tweets that the Union government had asked Twitter to block under the orders, were “innocuous” (not harmful or offensive), he said. He argued that there was no justification in blocking such tweets, and that because of such orders, Twitter’s business would be affected. Datar questioned the legality of the Blocking Orders pertaining to certain tweets on farmers’ agitations and alle g ed mismana g ement of Covid-19, asking why it was being ordered to block information when the media could report it.
