India went on to describe Canada as a safe haven for terrorists, with Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi revealing that extradition of 20-25 individuals had been sought based on their antecedents but there was no response to the demand. Gangster Sukhdul Singh Gangster Sukhdul Singh a.k.a Sukha Duneke, a wanted criminal in Punjab, was killed in the Canadian city of Winnipeg by unidentified people, in what is believed to be due to inter-gang rivalry. He had 18 cases against him, including that of murder The foreign office also said Canada did not share any specific information on the killing Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June on its soil, which triggered the stand-off. It added that there was a de- gree of prejudice in Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations on Indian role in Nijjar’s murder. As for the visa suspension, Bagchi said, “Our diplomatic staff in the High Commission RBI moots stringent guidelines to deal with wilful defaulters D i pa k M o n d a l @ New Delhi The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Thursday issued revised norms for banks and financial institutions to deal with wilful defaulters. According to the guidelines, banks have to examine large accounts to see if borrowers are sitting on cash and not repaying. Any borrower who has defaulted `25 lakh or more despite having the capacity to repay will , have to be identified as wilful defaulter. If the borrower has diverted or siphoned off funds, or sold assets given as security for loan, the wilful defaulter tag will be slapped. The tag will also apply if a borrower has failed to honour the commitment given to the lender to infuse equity The same fate awaits guarantors . who don’t honour their guarantee despite having the means to do so. RBI has proposed a separate category of defaulters with outstanding above `1 crore. Earlier, the guidelines on wilful defaulters were meant for scheduled commercial banks and financial institutions. The revised norms have bigger scope and are applicable to lenders (banks, NBFCs), asset reconstruction companies, and credit information companies. Once a person or entity is identified as a wilful defaulter, criminal action will follow. In a clarification issued on Thursday the finance ministry said the , fall in household savings is because of higher borrowings for purchase of real estate and vehicles. “Changing consumer preference for different financial products is the real reason for fall in household savings and that there is no distress as is being circulated in some circles,” read a statement. The ministry added that the concern over the drop in net household savings is unwarranted as the figures cited are ‘flow’ numbers (or net additions in FY23), and that the overall K S S R EE J I T H @T’Puram The Congress high command had selected V D Satheesan over Ramesh Chennithala as Leader of Opposition against the wish of a majority of party MLAs, reveals former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy’s autobiography, ‘Kalam Sakshi’, published posthumously . “I was of the opinion that Medical graduates from India will now be able to practice and pursue post-graduate studies abroad as the National Medical Commission, India’s top regulatory body for medical education and professionals, said it has received the coveted World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) Recognition Status for 10 years. “The National Medical Commission (NMC) has achieved the remarkable feat of being granted the coveted World Federation for Medical for the Education Commission on Foreign Medical Education (ECFMG) and United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). In the clarification, the ministry said households added net financial assets of `22.8 lakh crore in FY21, nearly `17 lakh crore in FY22, and `13.8 lakh crore in FY23. “So, they added less financial assets to their portfolio than in the previous year and the year before, but it is important to note that their overall net financial assets are still growing,” it said. The drop in net financial assets (net financial savings of households) in FY23 is due to a sharp rise in additional financial liabilities, which grew from `5.9 lakh crore in FY22 to `15.8 lakh crore in FY23. “They added financial assets by a lesser magnitude than in the previous years because they have now started taking loans to buy real assets such as homes,” it added.
