Union minister Shantanu Thakur claims it will be rolled out in 7 days P rana b M o n d a l an d M U K E S H R A N J A N @ Kolkata/ New Delhi The political mercury in West Bengal soared on Monday after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee joined issue with a Union minister who ‘guaranteed’ that the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) would be rolled out within a week. She urged people not to fall into the CAA trap after Union minister Shantanu Thakur said on Sunday it would be implemented across the country within seven days. Thakur is a representative of the influential Matua community in West Bengal that comprises Hindu refugees from Bangladesh. Addressing a gathering in Cooch Behar, Mamata said the CAA is being raked up again for electoral gains. She went on to accuse the Border security Force (BSF) of issuing ‘fake ‘identity cards. “Without being a citizen, how can they get government facilities and vote? The BSF is issuing separate identity cards for people living in border areas. Don’t accept them. Tell them you have Aadhaar and ration card and do not need the fake card. If you accept the card, your name will be deleted from the NRC (National Register of Citizens),” Mamata cautioned. Addressing a meeting in Kakdwip in South 24 Parganas, a Matua pocket, Thakur said, “Ram Mandir in Ayodhya has been inaugurated... Within the next seven days, the CAA will be implemented. This is my guarantee from this dais.” Union minister Shantanu Thakur and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Indian nationality Under the CAA, Indian nationality will be granted to persecuted non-Muslim migrants — Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christians — from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, who had come to India till Dec 31, 2014 Sources in the Union home ministry said the rules for the CAA rollout and an online portal for its facilitation are already in place. But the timing of its rollout will be decided at the highest level. Thakur was possibly used by the party’s leadership to test how big a buzz can be built ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, as its maximum impact will be in Bengal, sources claimed. “The rules are ready and the online portal is also in place and the entire process will be online. Applicants will have to declare the year when they entered India without travel documents. No document will be sought from the applicants,” a source said. growth report FinMin: India can become a developed country by ’47 EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE @ New Delhi INDIA’s economy is expected to grow above 7% in the coming years on the back of the country’s robust financial sector and ongoing reforms, says a new report of the Union finance ministry released ahead of the interim Budget. The report titled The Indian Economy: A Review envisions India becoming the world’s third-largest economy within the next three years with a GDP of $5 trillion and a $7-trillion economic power house by 2030. TDP may lose presence in RS SC dismisses state govt’s slp against for first time since inception naidu’s bail S V iswanat h @ Vijayawada S uchi t ra K a lyan M o han t y @ New Delhi The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the appeal of the Andhra Pradesh government challenging the High Court’s order granting anticipatory bail to TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu in the alleged Amaravati Inner Ring Road (IRR) scam. Disposing of the State government’s Special Leave Petition (SLP), a two-judge bench of the apex court, comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, noted that an appeal in the case arising from the same FIR involving other accused was already dismissed by the court last year. In view of the earlier order passed by the SC, the court is not inclined to entertain the appeal of the State government, the bench said. The High Court of Andhra Pradesh on January 10 had granted anticipatory bail to The State the former chief minister on various government will grounds, including the fact that the combe at liberty to plainant initiated criminal proceedings afapproach the ter a lapse of three years (allegedly due to Supreme Court political vendetta). After noting that Naidu for cancellation was not a flight risk, the HC granted him of bail in case, anticipatory bail. “This Court finds that the Chandrababu custodial interrogation of the petitioner Naidu does not cooperate with (Naidu) is not required to conduct further the probe investigation,” the HC had said in its order. Two-judge bench of The State government has accused Naidu Supreme Court of corrupt practices in creation of the masterplan for the Amaravati Inner Ring Road to benefit entities and persons associated with him. It had alleged that Naidu and others abused their official positions to favour certain entities in furtherance of a quid pro quo arrangement and caused loss to the public exchequer. Subsequently a case was registered against the TDP chief , and certain other government officials, under IPC Sections 120-B (Criminal Conspiracy), 420 (Cheating) and 34 (Common intention to commit a crime or offence), and certain sections of the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act. The HC had said that the State was unable to show any misappropriation of funds for personal benefit of Naidu. In its SLP filed before the Supreme Court, the State government said Naidu was trying to derail the investigation. For the first time since its inception, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) may not have presence in the Rajya Sabha after the tenure of its lone MP Kanakamedala Ravindra Kumar ends in April. The Election Commission of India on Monday announced that Rajya Sabha elections for three seats in Andhra Pradesh will be conducted on February 27. While the TDP has a strength of just 22 MLAs in the Assembly, it will require 44 votes to win the Rajya Sabha seat. Although winning even a single Rajya Sabha seat for the TDP looks like a tough task, the party leadership appears to be banking on the support of YSRC MLAs, who are unhappy with the ruling party for either dropping them or shifting them to other constituencies ahead of the Assembly elections. Despite tenures of several members expiring and elections to these Rajya Sabha seats being held on several occasions in the past five years, the TDP refrained from contesting the The Telugu Desam Party is likely to field its nominee for one of the three Rajya Sabha seats and will work out strategies to ensure the candidate wins TDP sources polls, resulting in the candidates nominated by the ruling YSRC winning unanimously . When four seats in the upper house of the Parliament fell vacant in 2020, the TDP had nominated politburo member Varla Ramaiah and issued a whip to four of its MLAs who had switched their loyalties to the YSRC. The party is likely to nominate Varla again. Currently, the State Legislative Assembly has a strength of 174. With the Speaker accepting the resignation of TDP MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao, the TDP’s count is down to 22. The ruling YSRC has 151 seats as well as the support of the lone Jana Sena Party (JSP) P4 MLA. mishap averted An accident was averted when TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu’s security personnel prevented him from slipping from the dais on Monday.
