The incident happened around 1 am, while de-inducting the jawans from a military training activity the Army said. , In a social media message, the Army’s Fire and Fury Corps said, “an Army tank got struck in the Shyok River, near Saser Brangsa, Eastern Ladakh due to sudden increase in the water level.” Rescue teams rushed to the location but due to high current in the swollen river following flash floods, the mission didn’t succeed and the tank crew lost their lives. Two T-72 tanks were trying to cross Shyok but one of them got stuck, officials said, adding the melting of snow resulted in the increase in the water levels. The deceased personnel were identified as M R K Reddy, Subhan Khan, Bhupendra Ne gi, E Teibam and Sadarbonia Nagaraju. This is the second biggest incident in which soldiers were killed during operational deployment. Eleven years later, a cricket-obsessed, trophy-starved nation will no longer need to look at 1983, 2007 or 2011 to sate themselves. On a sun-kissed Saturday, a new cricketing red-letter day was carved out at the iconic Kensington Oval in Barbados. As Rohit Sharma lifted the World Cup for the fourth time in their history a sense of , euphoria swept across the country which had become familiar with the sound of disappointment and agony in big games. They were not going to be denied. For a period of time, when Heinrich Klassen tore into Axar Patel with astonishing ease, a nation forgot to breathe. But when there’s Jasprit Bumrah, there’s a way, more often than not. After Hardik Pandya dismissed Klaasen against the run of play, Bumrah delivered two peerless overs. To watch your team lift a World Cup is a privilege not many fans will experience. That includes players too, 13 of whom have never (Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have won it) before had the sweet taste of global glory. This success will mean a lot to them, including Kohli and Sharma because of all the agonising misses and heart-breaks. CPM’s Kannur squabbles invite CPI wrath E x p r e s s N e w s Se r v i c e @ T’Puram In an unusual political move within the Left, the CPI leadership has come out against the squabbles in the Kannur CPM that have put the party and the front on a sticky wicket. Making an uncharacteristic intervention in the open fight between Kannur strongman P Jayarajan and ousted leader Manu Thomas, the CPI warned its big brother to be wary of vested interests linked to underworld and gold smuggling. Putting the CPM in a spot, the CPI leadership issued a strongly-worded statement, albeit without naming it. “The news emerging from Kannur pains us fellow beings of the communist movement. It’s a land that lays claim to a history of Kayyoor, Karivellur and Thillenkeri. Stories of underworld links and gold smuggling emanating from Kannur is an insult to the red flag,” reminded CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam. “The fact that those who play the role of Left protectors on social media have underworld links cannot go down well with genuine Left supporters. They are the people who played a key role in the recent setbacks faced by the Left movement in state,” the statement said.● More on P5
