Officials said the toll may go up as scores of people were seriously injured in the melee. The accident happened in Phulrai village of Ratibhanpur locality under Sikandrau tehsil area of Hathras district around 3 pm on Tuesday . This is the third consecutive year that the monsoon covered the entire nation on July 2 instead of the normal date of July 8. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reiterated its prediction that the country will receive above normal rainfall i.e. over 106% of long period average (LPA) between JuneSeptember. It is expected to boost sowing of Kharif crops and ease food inflation. The onset of the monsoon was early too. It arrived in Ker, ala on May 30, two days ahead of schedule. However, its journey so far has been haphazard. The country received 11% deficient rainfall in June, which was seventh lowest in the last 24 years. Its progression was normal in the first week of June but later it got subdued in the rest of the country except South India. During June, subdued rainfall was observed especially from June 10 to 18. Rainfall improved after June 19 and there was good precipitation from June 27 to 30. The delayed monsoon is in the range of 10-15 days in different parts of the East, Northwest and Central India. The Northwest recorded the highest deficit (-32.6%) in June followed by East and Northwest (-13.3%) and Central India (-13.2%). However, the Southern Peninsula received above normal rainfall (+14.2%). There were 10 commuters on board but no one was injured. The bus was completely destroyed by the fire. T h e i n c i d e n t o c c u r re d around 2pm when the Kelambakkam-bound bus from Broadway (102 cut) was moving on LB Road in Adyar. The driver halted the vehicle about 200 metres before the Adyar bus stop after noticing smoke emanating from the gearbox. He immediately alerted and evacuated the commuters. Within minutes, the gearbox and fuel tank caught fire, and the whole bus was ablaze. Fire services personnel rushed to the scene and doused the fire. As a precaution, police evacuated staff from nearby commercial establishments on LB Road. Officials said the bus, a BS IV-type one with old body, was renovated recently and converted to run on CNG for the pilot study. The CNG kit conversion was carried out by Chennai Gas Station Company with support from Torrent Gas Private Limited. The bus has been in operation since July 27. The permission was given in June by the public department headed by the chief secretary, sources said. No official statement, however, has been issued in this regard so far. A preliminary inquiry is to be carried out by the DVAC to check if the allegations made out in the complaint filed by an anti-corruption NGO in 2018 to the DVAC merit a formal registration of FIR. The complaint is based on a 2017 CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General of India) report which said that Tangedco was supplied with lower quality coal (based on calorific value) from Indonesia by suppliers than what was mandated under the tender. The CAG had compared data from Customs to show that while the coal supplied had 4,500 KCal/kg calorific value, it was supposed to have 6,000 KCal/kg.
