EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE @ Sambalpur IN a tragic incident, three elephants including a calf were electrocuted after coming in contact with an electric trap that had been laid by poachers to hunt wild boars on wee hours of Monday . The incident occurred in Naktideul range under Rairakhol forest division of the district. While the adult elephants, both females, were aged between 35 and 40 years, the male calf was around three to four-year-old. The jumbos were part of a herd of 11 elephants that had been roaming around the forest range since the last few days. The patient Subhakant Sahu, an army jawan, had suffered a cardiac arrest due to which his heart stopped beating. He was revived with the help of advanced extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (eCPR), marking the first such case in Odisha. Subhakant, a resident of Odapala village in Nayagarh district, was initially rushed to Ranpur hospital after he complained of heart-related complications on September 30. He was shifted to AIIMS the next day when his condition worsened. Associate professor and ECMO specialist Dr Krishna Mohan Gulla said eCPR is an emerging procedure used in cases of severe cardiac arrest when traditional methods fail. Though technically challenging, it has displayed amazing results in the treatment of some cardiac arrests, which are traditionally deemed fatal, he said. CONTINUED ON P5 @ Mumbai Bank interest rates will have to be far more affordable Nirmala Sitharaman ‘No undue concerns’ Amid concerns about growth slowdown, Sitharaman assured there is no need to have “undue concerns” FINANCE minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said the current cost of borrowing is very stressful and asked banks to cut the interest rates to make borrowing more affordable. “What is important is that when you look at our growth requirements, and you have so many different voices coming out and saying the cost of borrowing is really very stressful, and a time when we want industries to ramp up and move (to) building capacities, interest rates will have to be far more affordable,” Sitharaman said at a SBI event here. Her remarks come amid the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) decision not to lower the interest rates since February 2023. The rates were left unchanged for the tenth time in the October policy. Retail inflation, too, remains above the tolerance level. With the retail inflation rising to a 14-month high of 6.21% in October, analysts are expecting the central bank to keep the rates unchanged in the next policy review in December as well. However, the finance minister’s nudge came amid concerns about a possible slowdown in economic growth. Falling demand from urban consumers is one of the prime worries.
