Malhotra, 56, will assume charge on Wednesday a day af, ter the six-year tenure of incumbent Shaktikanta Das ends. A 1990 batch Rajasthan cadre IAS officer, Malhotra has been appointed for three years. He has extensive administrative experience of over 33 years working with various central and state government departments across finance, taxation, power, IT, and mining. Malhotra’s appointment comes at a challenging time as the central bank has to keep the country’s retail inflation within the mandated range of 2-6% while clearing the path for economic growth. His decisions will be watched keenly as the latest data shows retail inflation remains above RBI’s allowable limit at 6.21% in October while GDP growth has slumped to 5.4% in the second quarter of FY25. The delayed announcement of the new RBI governor’s appointment, made a day before Das’s tenure was to end, created a buzz that the incumbent might get another extension. That Das met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday fuelled the speculation. Das was appointed as RBI governor after the abrupt exit of Urjit Patel on December 12, 2018. In 2021, he was given a three-year extension, which will end on December 10. According to experts, the appointment shows the Central government’s preference for IAS officers as RBI governors, rather than bringing economists from outside. Malhotra’s experience in the finance ministry is expected to ensure smooth coordination with the government in matters of monetary policy . rs n o mi n e e s f i n a l is e d Naga Babu secures a spot in Cabinet B S N Malles w a r a Rao @ Vijayawada Deputy Chief Minister K Pawan Kalyan’s brother and Jana Sena Party General Secretary Nagendra Babu, popularly known as Naga Babu, is set to get a spot in the State Cabinet. The development was confirmed by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in a press release issued on Monday night. Naga Babu was expected to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Anakapalle. However, he had to compromise as the constituency was offered to the BJP as part of the seatsharing deal. After the TDP-led NDA secured a massive win in the State, there was speculation that Naga Babu would be appointed as the Chairman of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD). When that did not happen, it was expected that he would be nominated to the Rajya Sabha. His induction into the State Cabinet has come as a surprise. The JSP had won all 21 Assembly seats and two Parliament seats it contested. It was promised four berths in the Cabinet. However, at the time of the swearing-in ceremony only three JSP lead, ers, including Pawan Kalyan, were inducted into the Cabinet. As Nagababu is not an MLA currently he is re, quired to become a member of the Legislative Assembly or Council within six months from taking oath as Minister. In the letter, Ramakrishnudu alleged that influential individuals and companies gained enormous profits at the expense of BC and SC farmers and fishermen. He detailed how lands were acquired at meagre prices and resold for massive profits, citing figures like KV Rao Chowdary, who sold land to major entities such as GMR Group and Aurobindo Realty, generating profits worth thousands of crores. He also raised environmental concerns, including sea and air pollution, which have severely impacted local livelihoods, particularly in Konaseema and surrounding areas. In an exclusive interview with TNIE, Ramakrishnudu said his letter addressed the injustices surrounding the Kakinada Special Economic Zone (KSEZ), where BCs, fishermen, and SCs lost their income sources. He stated that corporate companies have earned thousands of crores by acquiring land from poor farmers, while compensating them with minimal amounts. He urged the Chief Minister to constitute a Statelevel committee to resolve these issues. He dismissed the controversy over referring to KV Rao as “Chowdary,” stating it should not be blown out of proportion. He clarified that the notification and land acquisition for KSEZ was not issued during his tenure as Finance Minister. He emphasised that he had opposed the KSEZ project from the outset. Ramakrishnudu also expressed gratitude to the TDP and its leadership, acknowledging the preference given to him and his family by party founder NTR and Chandrababu Naidu over the FULL INTERVIEW: P4 years. A two-judge bench of the court, led by Justice B R Gavai and Justice K V Viswanathan, observed, “Reservation cannot be on the basis of religion.” In its May 22 verdict, the high court had said, “Religion indeed appears to have been the sole criterion for declaring these communities as OBCs.” Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the state government, told the court that, “This reservation is not based on religion but backwardness which has been upheld by the court. Even for Hindus, its on the basis of backwardness.” The Supreme Court adjourned the matter to January 7 for a detailed hearing.
