(With agency inputs) `9L cr loss for investors as markets crash Sensex and Nifty fell 2% on Friday, mirroring deep losses in global markets over trade war fears. The aggressive sell-off eroded investors’ wealth by `9 lakh crore | P10 The Indian economy showed resilience and made smart recovery in the third (October-December) quarter after posting an underwhelming growth rate in the second quarter. According to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the real GDP grew at 6.2% in Q3 compared to 5.6% in the previous quarter. Meanwhile, the government’s second advanced estimate shows the economy might be growing at a slightly higher pace—at 6.5%— in FY25 against the previous estimate of 6.4%. In FY24, GDP grew at 9.2%, revised upwards from 8.6% as per earlier projections. The recovery in the third quarter was driven by better private and government consumption growth as well as by a heavy lifting in exports. Private consumption in real terms grew at 6.9% in the third quarter compared to 5.9% in the second. For the full year, private consumption is expected to grow at 7.6% compared to 5.6% a year ago. Government consumption grew at 8.3% during October-December compared to 3.8% in the previous quarter. Investments in asset creation, indicated by the gross fixed capital formation, however, remained a drag for the economy growing at 5.7% in Q3 compared to 5.8% in the previous quarter. For FY25, gross fixed capital formation showed a growth of 6.1% in real terms compared to 8.8% in the previous year. “The gross fixed capital formation at the economy level is around 30%, so there is room for the private sector to invest. Of course, there is uncertainty globally, but uncertainty isn’t there with respect to Indian demand; urban demand is recovering,” said Chief Economic Advisor V Ananth Nageswaran. He added that since outbound FDI by Indian firms has picked up, it makes sense for the Indian private sector to invest in a country whose current growth record exceeds the growth performance of other economies. Speaking at a public meeting organised in Chennai on Friday to celebrate his birthday, Stalin said, “Modi must give it in writing that Tamil Nadu will get its due representation (in Parliament) on the basis of 1971 population and the state’s rights will not be affected.” He also referred to the assurances given by former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and AB Vajpayee in this regard. Thanking Telangana and Karnataka for echoing Tamil Nadu’s voice on the issue, Stalin appealed to other states, too, to raise their voice for justice. “If we are not vigilant in saving our rights, Tamil people will be rendered without power in the future and there won’t be any value for our voice,” he added. The DMK chief also welcomed the AIADMK’s decision to take part in the all-party meeting called to discuss the delimitation issue on March 5. We should not do anything wrong against the party line,” sources quoted him as saying. AICC general secretary K C Venugopal said that no leaders have the right to make out-ofline statements in the media. The actor-turned-BJP MP and the veteran lyricistscreenwriter, have put an end to their compounding legal feud through mediation. After completing the formalities of the settlement, Kangana shared a photo on her social media where she was beaming in a grin standing alongside a smiling Akhtar. The actor, who earlier had some fiery exchanges with Akhtar, called him “kind” and “gracious” to have settled the matter. Their legal tussle began in 2020 when Kangana gave a TV interview after actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. In her shaky soft voice she made a big , claim about a meeting she had with Akhtar at his house. She said Akhtar pressured her to apologise to Hrithik Roshan over their much-publicised feud in 2016. Kangana even alleged that Akhtar warned her of dire consequences if she doesn’t act accordingly . Akhtar strongly rejected the claims. “Whatever Kangana said in the interview is a lie and nothing but a lie. I had told her about the agenda of the meeting on call. Didn’t call her to discuss t h e weather, political situation or America’s election in 2016,” Akhtar told the court. The man, known for writing some pow- er-packed Amitabh Bachchan dialogues wasn’t going to stay silent, was he? Neither was Kangana going to back down. She filed a counter-defamation case against Akhtar in 2021. Now, Kangana has clarified that what she said in the TV interview was due to a misunderstanding. Exiting the court after the hearing on Friday, Akhtar told the media, “The matters are finally settled. She has apologised for all the inconvenience caused to me. I will take back my case and she will take back her case.” Kangana added in her social media post that the veteran lyricist has agreed to write a song for her upcoming directorial. With the legalities settled, will we get to see a moment of “poetic justice” with their collaboration? Only time will tell.
