The fire occurred in the residence of Sri Krishna Pearls owner Prahlad Modi — a threestorey building that has the jewellery store on the ground floor and family living quarters above. Of the 21 people reportedly present in the house at the time, only four survived. Many of the deceased belonged to the same extended family, spanning three generations. Fire department officials said six victims died due to suffocation while 11 suffered fatal burn injuries. Preliminary reports suggested a short circuit at a power meter may have triggered the fire. Among the dead were 75-yearold Modi, his wife Munni, their children and grandchildren. Most victims were found unconscious when fire personnel reached them. They had reportedly retreated into rooms in a desperate attempt to escape the heat and smoke. Eyewitnesses described seeing smoke billowing from the building around 6.15 am. Locals attempted rescue efforts before fire personnel arrived. They also used private vehicles to rush the injured to hospitals as ambulances were delayed. Puri YouTuber Priyanka quizzed over Jyoti links A S I S H M E H TA @ Bhubaneswar AS Odisha Police stepped up investigation into the alleged links between Puri-based vlogger Priyanka Senapati and social media influencer Jyoti Malhotra, who was arrested by Haryana Police for allegedly spying for Pakistan, it has come to the fore that the former had also visited the neighbouring country earlier this year. Police have found that Priyanka had visited the Kartarpur Sahib Sikh shrine about three months back. The vlogger had shared the videos of her tour on her YouTube account. But it has been ascertained that she was not accompanied by Jyoti during the visit. “It is being verified, if Priyanka had gone there alone or was accompanied by anyone else. Probe is underway to establish whether her trip was as a plain tourist or there was any other motive behind it,” Priyanka Senapati and Jyoti Malhotra Puri SP Vinit Agrawal said on Sunday . Narender Kadyan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, said Mahmudabad will be produced before a local court and the police will seek his remand for further investigation.
