While details of the discussions between the two has not been made public, the chief minister in a social media post said that it was mostly about about developmental initiatives and accelerating overall economic growth of Odisha. “Today, I had the privilege of meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I am grateful for his inspiration and unwavering support for Odisha’s development,” the chief minister said. “On this occasion, we had important discussion on various developmental works in Odisha, future plans, centre-state coordination and accelerating the state’s overall progress. The centre and state are committed to working together to achieve the goal of a prosperous Odisha and a developed India,” he said. Majhi’s meeting with the prime minister also assumes significance in the backdrop of pending cabinet expansion and political appointments to different corporations and boards of the state government. Even after one year completion of the BJP government in the state, the chief minister has not expanded his cabinet where six more ministers can be inducted. Currently his cabinet has 15 , ministers including two deputy chief ministers. While the newly re-elected state BJP president Manmohan Samal has announced that the state cabinet reshuffle will take place soon and the new state PSU chairpersons to be appointed, Majhi’s meeting the PM and top national party functionaries has fuelled speculations over the exercise to finalise the list. Was flying AI 171 under Sabharwal’s watch ‘Harassed’ by HoD, FM student sets herself afire A S I S H M E H TA / S U K A N TA K U M A R S A H U @ Bhubaneswar/Balasore IN a shocking incident, a second-year girl student of integrated BEd at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore set herself afire on the college campus alleging severe harassment by the head of the department (HoD) The 20-year-old Soumyashri Bisi, of Bhograi, sustained 90 per cent burns and was rushed to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar. Her condition is stated to be critical and she is on ventilator support. As per police, Bisi took the drastic step alleging the HoD Samir Sahu was demanding favours from her over poor attendance. A case was registered and Sahu arrested under relevant sections of the BNS including sexual harassment and abetment of suicide. Sources said Bisi had reportedly been facing harassment at the hands of Sahu since long and had also taken the matter to the college principal Dillip Ghosh around six months back. She had last met the principal on June 30 and sought action against Sahu alleging he was threatening to give her poor marks in the examination if she did not comply . In a letter to the college’s internal complaints committee (ICC) on July 1, Bisi had alleged that Sahu had been mentally and sexually harassing her for the last few months as well as demanding favours and even threatening to fail her in the examinations. She even claimed that she had earlier attempted suicide due to the harassment. The authorities had reportedly assured her of looking into the matter within five days. However, as the issue was not resolved, Bisi met the college principal again earlier in the day with her brother Soumya Ranjan. When she did not receive any satisfactory response, she staged a demonstration outside the main entrance of the college. She then poured petrol on her body and immolated herself. The incident took place at around 12.30 pm. Bisi’s friend Jyotiprakash Biswal of Balasore’s Dublagadi village, who was present at the spot, also sustained injuries while trying to save her. After the incident, college principal Ghosh said Bisi met him on the day and he counselled her for about 20 to 25 minutes. “I advised her to be patient and assured that the matter would be resolved,” he added. Rishabh Pant and Jadeja chip in with halfcenturies as visitors look all set to go ease past England and put in a healthy score A month after a horrific Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad killed 260 people, including 19 non-passengers, a preliminary report released by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau in the wee hours of Saturday indicated possible human error as fuel supply to both the engines of the aircraft was stopped just three seconds after takeoff. The two fuel cut-off switches were activated to the CUT OFF mode within a gap of a second, resulting in engine deceleration and plane crash though the fuel switches were subsequently switched back to RUN. The 15-page report on AI 171 says the aircraft started rolling at 1.37 pm after receiving clearance from the Air Traffic Control. “The aircraft air/ground sensors transitioned to air mode, consistent with lift off at 1.38 pm. It achieved the maximim recorded air speed of 180 knots at 1.38 pm and immediately thereafter, the Engine 1 and Engine 2 fuel cutoff switches transitioned from RUN to CUT OFF position one after another with a time gap of 01 sec. The Engine N1 and N2 began to decrease from their takeoff values as the fuel supply to the engines was cut off,” it said. The fuel cutoff appears to have shocked one of the pilots. “In the cock- pit voice recording, one of the pilots is heard asking the other why did he cutoff. The other pilot responded that he did not do so,” the report states. AI 171 started losing altitude before it crossed the airport perimeter wall. CCTV footage showed Ram Air Turbine (RAM) getting deployed during the initial climb after takeoff and its hydraulic pump began supply hydraulic power at 1.38 pm. RAM provides emergency power if the main systems fail. The pilots then transitioned the fuel switch of Engine 1 back to RUN at 1.38 pm. Four seconds later, the Engine 2 fuel cut off switch also transitioned from CUTOFF to RUN. “When fuel control switches are moved from CUTOFF to RUN while the aircraft is in flight, each engine’s full authority dual control engine automatically manages a relight and thrust recovery sequence of ignition and fuel introduction,” the report says. While Engine 1’s deceleration stopped and it started to progress to recovery, Engine 2 could not arrest the deceleration and re-introduced fuel repeatedly to increase core speed acceleration, it added. By 1.39 pm, one of the pilots transmitted “MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY”. The Air Traffic Controller enquired about the call sign, did not get any response but observed the aircraft crashing outside the airport boundary .
