BJP complains after CM’s anti-CAA speech E x p r e s s N e w s Se r v i c e @ Malappuram Catapulting the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) into a poll plank in the state, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Monday that the BJP-led Union government is attempting to convert Muslims into second-class citizens through the CAA. “Giving citizenship based on religion is a blatant violation of our constitutional principles,” the chief minister said at an anti-CAA rally organised by the Constitution Protection Committee in Malappuram. Picking up on Pinarayi’s speech, the BJP shot off a petition to the Election Commission of India complaining that the CM violated the model code of conduct. At the rally, Pinarayi said: “Through the CAA, they are providing citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, or Christian refugees from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, or Pakistan. They deliberately avoided Muslims from the list of communities. With the CAA, they aim to make the citizenship of migrant Muslims in the country illegal.” In the complaint, BJP state executive committee member K K Surendran said the CM is misleading the people by stating that Kerala will not implement laws like CAA and NPR, thus creating a Hindu-Muslim divide and in● More on P5 stilling hatred among them. P7 Fraud via ‘sold’ bank accounts: Cops warn of worrying trend A R U N M @ Kochi Ashwin and Athul both say they became aware of the fraud that they had become party to only when Ernakulam Rural police arrested them in connection with a case in which a 62-year-old Aluva native lost `1.15 crore to online scamsters. As it turned out, portions of loot were channelled through a bank account that 25-year-old Ashwin had purportedly sold for `15,000. The story was no different for Athul. In fact, police traced transactions worth `10 crore to Ashwin’s account that he claimed to have no knowledge of. Worse still, 33-yearold Athul was found to have opened another account using the credentials of his mother-in-law and sold it off in a similar manner, officers pointed out. The Aluva native transferred the money in six instalments to five bank accounts, including Ashwin’s. Officers realised that the other four accounts had also been purchased by fraudsters in a similar manner. Ashwin and Athul are currently in judicial custody . Fraudsters buying bank accounts is a dangerous new trend that the public should be aware, say officers. Hundreds of complaints of online cheating using ‘sold accounts’ are being reported across the state, they add. Swindlers have become more sophisticated and now target educated youths and women, who offer big money for online trading, cryptocurrency investments and gaming, say officers. Explaining the modus operandi, an officer said, the cheats approach people on the pretext of operating their bank accounts for online trading, gaming and cryptocurrency transactions. ● More on P5 pressure, now on social media Requests citizens to change their display picture; plan to gherao PM’s house today A nu p Ve r ma @ New Delhi Intensifying its ongoing agitation against the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the Aam Aadmi Party on Monday launched the ‘Modi ka sabse bada darr — Kejriwal’ display picture (DP) campaign. “From today 3 pm, all leaders, MLAs, and workers of the Aam Aadmi Party will change their DP to say ‘Modi is afraid of Kejriwal’,” the party said. The AAP urged the citizens to do likewise. “Change your DP on all platforms, whether it’s WhatsApp, X, Facebook or Instagram, and give the entire country the message that this fight is not just Kejriwal’s. It’s the fight of the entire nation, a battle to save democracy and the Constitution.” As part of the campaign, all senior party leaders and supporters changed their social media profile DP in support of the AAP chief who is under the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) remand till March 28. The party appealed to citizens to download photos from indiawithkejriwal.com and set them as their DP to raise their voice against the arrest. But at 10.20 pm, there were just 27,434 downloads from the indiawithkejriwal site, indicating the campaign is yet to pick up pace. The party said those who support the Delhi CM and want to convey the message nationwide that democracy is being ‘eliminated’ ought to join this campaign and ventilate their ‘anger’. At a press conference here, Delhi minister Atishi said Kejriwal is the only leader in the country who can challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi and so he was arrested by the ED without any evidence just after the announcement of Lok Sabha polls. It’s a case where even after two years of investigations, not a single penny of the alleged proceeds of crime has been recovered from any AAP leader, she added. While shared-auto services may be unfamiliar to most Keralites, the concept has proven to be both cost-effective and convenient in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur. In 2022, the state regional transport authority (RTA) gave its thumbs-up to shared-auto services, but nothing came of it. The militant auto unions in the state are known to be opposed to the idea, and it remains to be seen how they would react once the project takes off, sources said. The RTA directive cleared the way for up to three passengers in a vehicle -- exclusively e-autos -- and the collection of a minimum of `10 for every 2 k m t r av elled. The concept is seen as key to providing affordable lastmile connectivity to metro passengers. The Kochi Metro project was conceived as a sustainable and affordable mode of public transport. “Shared auto is among the strategies we are considering to enhance the affordability of metro travel. The study will identify demand and address transit gaps, focusing on areas lacking bus connectivity or experiencing service deficiencies. It does not make sense to travel in the metro for `30, only to pay `50 to hire an auto to reach the final destination,” a KMRL official said. The first shared-auto service will run between Cusat metro station and the university campus, which is spread across 180 acres, on a trial basis, the official said. “RTA has sanctioned shared mobility in Kochi. Discussions are ongoing, taking into consideration the conventional autos plying the route. We are planning a system that won’t impact other auto drivers,” the official said. “Cusat is ideal as students can utilise the service within the campus,” he said. “Shared mobility is key as it will help reduce travel costs,” the official said, adding students will otherwise not benefit from Kochi Metro. In his resignation letter to the gover nor, Saseendran cited personal reasons for stepping down. The order revoking the suspension of students was later withdrawn. Sidharthan, a second year student, was found dead in the hostel of the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Pookode, Wayanad, on February 18, allegedly following ‘mob trial’ and physical assault by a group of students. Khan, in his capacity as chancellor of the university, sought an explanation from the VC for using the word ‘exonerated’ in the order — dated March 14 — revoking the students’ suspension. The governor issued a stern warning to the VC for ‘exonerating’ students when a CBI probe has been ordered into Siddharathan’s death. “Following the governor’s intervention, the VC informed him that the order will be withdrawn. Shortly afterwards, the VC tendered his resignation,” said a source ● More on P5 in Raj Bhavan.
