House proceedings were adjourned for half an hour after DMK members staged protests over Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s remarks that the Tamil Nadu government was ‘dishonest’ on the issue of implementing the PM Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme. Replying to a question, Pradhan said the TN government took a U-turn on implementing the centrally-sponsored scheme, which envisaged strengthening the schools managed by central, state or local bodies. The minister said that the state government had agreed to PM SHRI scheme and several (DMK) MPs, who came to see him, conveyed this to him. “But when they went back, they made a UTurn. They are doing mischief with the life of the students. They are misleading the people and doing injustice to students of Tamil Nadu. They are undemocratic,” he alleged. Pradhan said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin had also agreed initially but then “suddenly some super CM appeared and they took a U-Turn”. In a letter to IPL Chairperson Arun Singh Dhumal, the Director General of Health Services (DGHS), Prof (Dr) Atul Goel said, “IPL should strictly implement the regulations banning all forms of tobacco/alcohol advertising, including surrogate advertisements, within the stadium premises where IPL games are held”. He added it is their social and moral obligation to promote public health. “Cricket players are role models for youngsters for promoting a healthy, active lifestyle. IPL, being the largest sports platform in the country, has a social and moral obligation to promote public health and support health initiatives of the government,” Goel wrote in the letter dated March 5, which was also addressed to BCCI President Roger Binny . Loans for development of capital don’t come under AP’s debt ceiling Express News Service @ Vijayawada In a significant relief to Andhra Pradesh, the Government of India has decided that loans provided for the State’s Capital City development will not be factored into its borrowing ceiling. This was stated by Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary in writing, in reply to a question raised by YSRCP MP Maddila Gurumoorthy in the Lok Sabha. The Union Minister explained that the Centre has already allocated `2,500 crore as Special Assistance (Grants) for the development of essential infrastructure in Amaravati. Additionally, it has secured multilateral loan approvals of approximately `6,700 crore each from the World Bank (effective from January 22, 2025) and the Asian Development Bank (effective from February 10, 2025) for the Amaravati Integrated Urban Development Programme, and the Inclusive and Sustainable Capital City Development Programme respectively. However, no disbursements have been made yet. These funds will support development of critical infrastructure, including the State Assembly Secretariat, and Raj Bhavan , within the Amaravati Government Complex. The Centre has also decided to provide counterpart funding of not more than 10% of the total current project cost (i.e. maximum `1,500 crore) as Special Assistance (Grant) to Andhra Pradesh, the Union Minister said.
