An advisor to the previous YSRC government, Sajjala has been listed as accused number 120 in the case. He was accompanied by his lawyer and former additional advocate general (AAG) Ponnavolu Sudhakar Reddy, and for mer minister Mer ug a Nagarjuna. Police refused the lawyer’s request to be present during Sajjala’s questioning, stating that he had to get the court’s permission for the same. Speaking to reporters after the questioning, Sajjala slammed the TDP-led NDA government for foisting false cases against YSRC leaders. Alleging political vendetta, he accused the government of silencing the opposition and trying to distract the public from the growing popularity of YSRC and its leader YS Jagan Mohan Reddy . Asserting that he was not in Mangalagiri on the day of the attack, the YSRC leader maintained that he was in Badvel, campaigning for the byelection. Stressing that YSRC leaders are determined to fight back against the illegal cases, he demanded the government to stop harassing them or face consequences. Further, he claimed that a Look Out Circular (LOC) was lodged against him to harass him. THE Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the constitutional validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, 1955, which grants Indian citizenship to immigrants from Bangladesh who entered Assam before the cutoff date of March 25, 1971. “Parliament had the legislative competence to enact it,” the five-judge Constitution bench, led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, ruled in a 4:1 majority verdict. While the CJI and Justices Surya Kant, M M Sundresh, and Manoj Misra upheld the constitutional validity of Section 6A, Justice J B Pardiwala dissented and quashed Section 6A prospectively . The majority verdict held that Section 6A was enacted to balance the humanitarian concerns with the need to protect the local population. Reading out the verdict, Chandrachud said that enactment of Section 6A was a political solution to a unique problem faced by Assam due to the huge influx of immigrants after creation of Sec 6A was brought in to deal with those covered under the 1985 Assam Accord, signed by then Rajiv Gandhi govt & aasu 1 Under this, those who reached Assam after Jan 1, 1966 but before Mar 25, 1971 must register for citizenship 2 But they can’t vote for 10 years. Those who had come after March 25, 1971 are bound to be deported Bangladesh. The immigrants seriously threatened the state’s culture and demography, the court noted in its judgment. In this context, the apex court also stressed the need for strict implementation of the statutory provisions to trace the illegal immigrants in Assam and deport them. The apex court asked the Centre and the state government to implement directions in the Sarbananda Sonowal judgments to deal with illegal immigrants and made it clear that it would from now onwards monitor the identification and deportation process. “Those who have entered Assam from Bangladesh on or after March 3 Petitioners argued that Section 6A helped mass immigration, wanted 1951 as cut-off year to detect and deport 4 SC said the impact of influx of migrants is higher in Assam due to its small land size, and detection is tough 25, 1971 are all illegal immigrants, who must be identified, detected, and deported,” the majority judgment said. The verdict came on a batch of petitions filed by various parties, including Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha, a Guwahati-based civil society organisation, which had moved the apex court challenging Section 6A way back in 2012. Section 6A of the Citizenship Act was introduced to give effect to the Assam Accord, an agreement signed in 1985 between the Government of India and the leaders of the Assam movement, who wanted removal of foreigners who entered Assam from Bangladesh. 4 IAS officers from TG report to Chief Secy E x p ress N e w s S er v i c e @ Vijayawada Four All India Services (AIS) officers, who were relieved by the Telangana government on Wednesday reported to Andhra , Pradesh Chief Secretary Neerabh Kumar Prasad at the Secretariat in Velagapudi on Thursday.
