This decision, relayed by top government sources on Saturday afternoon, fuelled a speculation that the ongoing armed conflict between the two countries was nearing its end. Although there has been no official stand re g arding the decision to classify future terror attacks as acts of war, sources on condition of anonymity confirmed it. This marks the first time the government has made such a declaration in relation to terrorism, sending a clear and strong message to Pakistan, which India has long accused of harbouring and supporting terror outfits operating from its territory . External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said, “India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so.” Sources later said the stoppage of firing and military action between India and Pakistan was “worked out directly between the two countries”. “The Pak DGMO initiated the call this afternoon after which discussions took place and understanding reached. There is no decision to hold talks on any other issue at any other place,” sources said. The cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan was triggered by a call from Pakistan’s DGMO, Major General Kashif Abdullah, to his Indian counterpart, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, they said. Sources then said the ceasefire was focused solely on halting military action. Measures previously announced by India, including keeping the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance would remain in effect. THE Southwest monsoon (SWM) is set to reach Kerala on May 27, four days earlier than the usual date of June 1, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast on Monday . According to the MeT office, in case it arrives on the predicted date, it will be marked as one of the earliest arrivals of the monsoon in recent years. The earliest recorded arrival of the monsoon was on May 18, 1990. Other early arrivals occurred on May 22, 1999, and May 23 in 1974 and 2009. Operational forecasts for the onset of the monsoon in Kerala over the past 20 years (20052024) have generally proven accurate, with the exception of the year 2015. The IMD stated that the SWM is likely to advance into the South Andaman Sea, parts of the Southeast Bay of Bengal, and the Nicobar Islands by May 13, which is ahead of the normal schedule of May 15 for 2025. It is expected to progress into Arabian Sea, Maldives, and Comorin area within the next four-five days.
