The move comes a day after the CEC asked Rahul Gandhi, leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, to either file an affidavit substantiating his vote theft allegations or apologise. The pro- posal for an impeachment motion was discussed at the INDIA bloc meeting on Monday morning. Several Opposition leaders met in the chamber of Mallikarjun Kharge, leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, and held discussions on how the CEC on Sunday addressed a press conference without answering any of the questions raised by them, according to a leader who attended the meeting. The Opposition also decided not to cooperate with the gov- ernment on the special discussion on the impact of astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla’s space mission. The Lok Sabha is having a two-day special discussion on the issues. Some opposition MPs said they feel this fight has to be taken forward and suggested an impeachment motion against the CEC, sources said. RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday—their second call in the past 10 days— to brief him on his summit with US President Donald Trump in Alaska. Putin’s telephone call came amid mounting pressure from US over India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, which Washington claimed was funding Moscow’s war in Ukraine. During the call, Putin shared his take on his meeting with Trump and Modi responded by reaffirming India’s position: support for a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy . “Thank my friend, President Putin, for his phone call and for sharing insights on his recent meeting with President Trump in Alaska,” Modi posted on so- US will ensure peace deal works: Trump After meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House, US President Donald Trump said the US will be involved in providing security guarantees for Ukraine as part of any peace deal and will “make sure it works” cial media. “India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard.” The two leaders also discussed expanding bilateral cooperation, underscoring their intention to deepen the ‘Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership’. He reiterated that India supports all efforts in this regard,” the Ministry of External Affairs said. The timing of the conversation is politically charged. Just weeks ago, Trump slapped a 25% punitive tariff on Indian goods, citing New Delhi’s refusal to scale down energy imports from Russia. This came on top of a 25% reciprocal tariff imposed by India, signalling rising trade friction. New Delhi has pushed back, with the MEA stressing that India’s energy policy is dictated by national interest and market realities, not external pressure. “India-Russia relations are a steady and time-tested partnership,” it said, warning against viewing the relationship “through the prism of a third country”. Monday’s telephone call follows Modi and Putin’s August 8 conversation, which came a day after National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met with the Russian president in Moscow. Aroor-Thuravoor NH stretch nightmare for travellers B i j u E Pa u l @ Alappuzha A commute through the AroorThuravoor stretch of NH 66 is nothing short of a nightmare for travellers. Pothole filled service and parallel roads are resulting in heavy congestion on the highway between Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram, leading to immense hardships to commuters. The absence of proper diversions, coupled with poor road condition and unsafe construc- tion practices, has led to frequent accidents and severe snarl-ups on the stretch. K P Suresh, a resident of Thuravoor, said the ordeal has persisted for more than two years since the project began. “Before starting construction, the company and NHAI officials assured us that proper alternatives would be arranged. They promised heavy vehicles would be diverted to avoid congestion. But even now, container lorries and trucks carrying heavy loads ply through the stretch, causing daily traffic blocks. Service roads were also promised, but in most places, they don’t exist. Where they do, they are filled with huge potholes, often waterlogged, making it risky for two-wheelers and pedestrians,” he said. The construction itself has worsened matters. Heavy machinery occupies much of the carriageway, often halting vehicle movement for hours. Accidents are also frequent. On Sunday a 24m-long, 50-tonne , iron beam collapsed while being lifted onto girders. Though no one was injured, the incident highlighted the dangers of ongoing works. Just weeks earlier, another beam had slipped during placement. “Such accidents are regular, and nobody seems concerned about the safety of thousands who travel daily,” said Josemon, a native ● More on P4 of Pattanakkad.
