The angry young protesters pelted stones at policemen, torched the BJP office, and damaged public property. Some of the injured are in serious condition. According to sources, tension was brewing since Tuesday after two persons fell ill and had to be hospitalised during the ongoing hunger strike led by climate activist Sonam Wangchuk demanding Sixth Schedule benefits and statehood for Ladakh. Following the violence, Wangchuk called off his hunger strike. On Wednesday, hundreds of youths took to the streets in Leh in response to a call by the Leh Apex Body for shutdown. Chanting slogans like “We will not beg for our rights,” the protesters clashed with security personnel. The youth pelted stones at policemen, who retaliated by firing tear smoke shells and resorting to baton charge. The protesters then set afire police vehicles and a BJP office. They also pelted stones on some government offices. Intense clashes continued throughout the day, resulting in casualties and injuries. PM Modi to roll out Swadeshi 4G from Jharsuguda E x p r e s s N e w s Se r v i c e @ Bhubaneswar Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch a slew of projects including the pan-India roll-out of indigenously developed 4G network of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) from Jharsuguda on September 27. Even as the detailed itinerary of the PM’s visit to the state is still awaited, informed sources said Modi will inaugurate 92,633 4G sites across eight states including Odisha. These sites, developed with funding of Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN) and indigenous 4G stack technology, will provide high-speed internet services to over 2.20 crore users. Around 20 lakh users will access digital services for the first time. The Prime Minister will have live interaction with 10 sites of Odisha, Leh, North-East states and some sites in the left wing extremism areas during the event.
