More big cats are dying outside protected reserves than inside. Latest data from the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) shows that of 166 tiger deaths in 2025 in India, 88 deaths or 53% were recorded outside a protected reserve. In all, around 51% of 725 recorded fatalities in the last five years occurred outside tiger reserves, driven by the fact that about 30% of the country’s tigers now roam freely outside notified protected areas. A senior NTCA officer, who asked not to be named, pointed to severe staffing shortages. “We’re stretched thin in the field. Our forensic labs are understaffed too, which delays sample analysis and slows our response. That’s partly why poachers aren’t caught and prosecuted quickly enough.” The latest State of Tiger report confirms one in five staff positions remain empty across tiger reserves. In the wake of the ruling by the Nedumangad Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, Raju stands disqualified as MLA and will be barred from contesting elections for six years after his prison term ends. However, the MLA, the second accused in the evidence tampering case registered by the vigilance, will not go behind bars immediately as the court granted him onemonth bail to appeal the verdict. Former court clerk Jose, the first accused, was also handed a three-year sentence under IPC 201 (disappearance of evidence), besides a fine of `10,000. The duo was also sentenced to three years in jail under IPC Section 193 (furnishing false evidence), two years under Section 465 (forgery), and six months under IPC 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy). Jose was handed another one-year jail term and fined `5,000. All sentences will run concurrently .
