The adoption marks a significant diplomatic breakthrough for India, the host of 18th BRICS Summit, with New Delhi playing a key role in bridging competing positions among members and ensuring that differences over West Asia did not derail the summit outcome. The declaration, while not assigning responsibility for the conflict, calls for restraint, protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and respect for the “sovereignty and territorial integrity of the States”. “We express deep concern over the continued escalation of tensions in Middle East/ West Asia and, recalling our respective national positions, call for exercising maximum restraint, as well as avoiding actions that could further aggravat e t h e s i t u at i o n , ” t h e declaration said. It also called for greater use of “dialogue and diplomacy” towards a longterm understanding that can contribute to peace, security and stability in the region. The final declaration adopted broader language, expressing “serious concern” over deliber- on p9 ate attacks on civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities under full IAEA safeguards, and stressing that nuclear safeguards, safety and security must be upheld even during armed conflicts. While Bengaluru topped the list with 503 child labourers being rescued by the city police, 72 children were rescued in Vijayapura, 33 in Tumakuru, 27 in Koppal, 22 in Kalaburagi, 15 in Ballari and 13 in Mysuru. The special operation, which began at 10 am on Saturday in Bengaluru city, was led by DCPs from all 11 police divisions, along with two DCPs from the Central Crime Branch (CCB). Police teams inspected and raided 5,897 locations, including commercial establishments, industrial areas, factories, shops, garages, construction sites, hotels, petrol stations, malls and other establishments, where children may have been employed. Eighteen cases were registered against shop owners who had engaged child labourers, under the provisions of the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act and the Juvenile Justice Act. The crackdown follows the chief minister’s early morning visit to the APMC market on September 8. He interacted with farmers, workers and traders and heard their grievances. Noticing that children had been working at the market, he directed the police and other officials to take action against establishments employing child labourers and ensure that the children were rescued. The victim who was running a mutton shop was bedridden for the last two years after a stroke. The wife became close to another person who came to their house regularly to treat her daughter suffering from a mental disorder. The victim, upset over his wife’s illicit relationship, kept warning her. That triggered the wife and her mother to smother the victim to death, the police said. The arrested have been identified as Shahina Banu, a resident of Yellappa Garden in Kithaganur, her mother Hasina and her alleged lover Naheemuddin Qureshi. The victim has been identified as Mubarak, 40. Shahina and Mubarak got married some 15 years ago, and the couple has a daughter. Mubarak had been bedridden for the past two years after suffering a paralytic stroke, while their daughter also fell ill during the period.  P7
