The infestation has so far spread across nearly 80 acres of plantations, raising concern among the 2.45 lakh farmers engaged in coffee cultivation across more than 2.5 lakh acres in the district. The first confirmed outbreak was traced to Pakanakudi village in Chinalabudu panchayat of Paderu revenue division. The pest has since been identified in several other areas, including 29 acres in Pakanakudi, 29 acres in Malivalasa, 7 acres in Malasingaram, 5 acres in Chinalabudu, and 2 acres in Turayikeeyida. Coffee Berry Borer causes damage by boring into coffee berries, and feeding on the beans, resulting in significant crop loss, and reduced bean quality . The most visible symptom is a small pinhole at the navel of the berry . To contain the spread, farmers have been instructed to immediately harvest all berries from infected plantations, collect fallen berries, boil the harvested crop in hot water for two to three minutes, and bury it in P4 pits three feet deep. Affected farmers to get aid The State government has announced a compensation of `50 per kg of damaged coffee produce, and `20,000 per acre, along with free distribution of 1 lakh saplings and seeds In a sign of a possible thaw amid ongoing trade tensions and tariff pressure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday reaffirmed India’s commitment to its partnership with the United States, responding positively to the remarks by US President Donald Trump. Taking to X, Modi said: “Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump’s sentiments and positive assessment of our ties. India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.” Modi’s response came hours after President Trump described the India-US relationship as “very special” during a White House press briefing, during which he said: “I’ll always be friends with Modi. He’s a great prime minister.” However, Trump also added: “I just don’t like what he is doing at this particular moment.” When asked whether he was open to resetting ties, Trump said: “I always will. I’ll always be friends with Modi... But India and the US have a very special relationship. There is nothing to worry about.” The exchange comes against the backdrop of rising trade friction between the two countries, including the US decision to double tariffs on key Indian goods to 50%. The move, linked in part to India’s continued purchase of Russian crude oil, has been termed by New Delhi as “ u n f a i r, u n j u s t i f i e d a n d unreasonable”. Responding to a question on his post suggesting the US was “losing India and Russia to China,” Trump said, “I don’t think we have. I’ve been very disappointed that India would be buying so much oil from Russia.” Despite these differences, both sides have emphasised their long-term strategic relationship. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday underscored the importance Modi places on the US partnership. He said “PM Modi attaches enormous importance to our partnership with the US.” W I T H T HI S I S S UE Made in Japan PLUS 12 P AGES
